i am starting my new build. i need input from you guys on my light weight hunting rifle. i want to try to build this rifle under 7lbs. i have a long action magnum remington action. thats where this begins. im thinking 300 rum shooting 210 bergers. im thinking 2.5 lbs action----2.5lbs barrel----1.5-2lbs stock is this possible?

what do you guys think about shaving some of the action for weight?

do carbon fiber barrels weigh light enough? what contour would work here?

who makes the best light stock? would you go carbon fiber here also?

All I can say with a 7lb 300 RUM is HANG ON:D
You could do it, but you'll have to drop barrel length and contour down below a justifiable means for that cartridge.
My 300 WBY ULW (non-braked)weighed 6 3/4lb plane jane and it would beat the snot right out of ya.

That'd be a rifle to climb mountains with, but I'd want a brake at that weight, I think. Ask Shawn or Kirby or one of the other smith here.

I saw a scoped 300RUM over in MT a couple of years ago that had some super light custom made carbon stock that barely weighed over a pound (the stock, that is) and a pencil thin 26" barrel--made my factory barrel look fat. If I recall it came in at just under or right at 7lbs scoped. Seemed like a feather compared to my (at the time) nearly 11lb RUM. It shot well too. It was offered to me to shoot. I was too chicken as it didn't have a brake and he was shooting 180 AB's at 3400fps--his Nosler brass was showing the pressure as you might expect. I've gotten beat up enough with my 9-10 lb. RUM shooting 200AB's at 3200fps and 240's at 3000fps!

thats my problem also. im tired of carrying my 13 lbs 7mmwsm. thats why i want this. i will still use that rifle for sniping deer and elk but when i have to climb after them i want a lighter one.

I built a 300wsm on a Remington with a 27"Magnum research bull barrel and a lone wolf howler carbon fiber stock and the weight came in at 7lb even without a scope. But I could have saved about 1 1/2 lb buy going with a Lone Wolf summit stock and the Magnum Research sporter. I just put a savage together for a buddy with the 27" MR sporter barrel with a Bell and Carlson duramax stock and it was under 7lb. These weights are not including a scope. Were you wanting 7lb with a scope?

I am a huge fan of the Lone Wolf stock. Even having my 3rd one built right now.
