Gentlemen

I am helping a friend building a .338 LM and it will be quite a rig
The only problem is that I now need to get something BIGGER those are the rules.

What would be the best:

408 CheyTac, M310 R
416 Barrett, M99

375 CheyTac is also an option.

If money is no issue, 408. If cash is a little short, 416 Barrett. Just the fact you are considering the two, I must assume you can afford either so I would go 408. Just keep in mind the 416 is super sonic a little further and you can get the BORS system on your scope for it.

You are setting yourself up for a huge expence down the road.....Why, you ask?? Simple. You choose the Chytec or the Barret.....Then he buys, or builds a 50 BMG. Now.....you will need to trump the 50 BMG....."Those are the rules"!! Big expence!!! Kind of tough to do, don't you think??


I would go directly to the 50 BMG......make HIM trump the 50 BMG. Hell, you can buy a turn key Armalite AR 50 for under 3 grand. Sure , you will need to buy all new loading and cleaning stuff. But hey....so what....."THOSE ARE THE RULES"

4xforfun has it right. If you go less than a 50 he can just trump you again without getting anything too radical.

My friend and I will not go that fare. We just want rifles with good hitting power at 1000m, I just want a bit more and are willing to spend more. I wanne be top dog
I really think the light M310 R is a good hunting tool for shooting the 408 CheyTac.
.50 BMG is a heavy rifle/rig, and I do not have to hit that hard out there.
We will also take these rifles to Scotland and shoot deer so the rifles have to be legal for hunting, the .50 BMG is not legal for hunting in most European countries.

Well we have both been there and done that, I have hunted semi LR (350m) with .338 LM in Afrika, up-close-and-personal with double rifle and blood-on-the-shoes close with knife.
The next challenge is +1000m and within a couple of years it should be possible to get there.

You are well within the capabilities of the 338 LM at 1000m. As far as 408, 416 or 50 BMG at 1000m, what is the point - just asking ?

I would like a rig that could reach 2000m meters at some point when I become capable of reaching out there.
The extra cost from a .338 LM to a 408 CheyTac is not that much.
And do not ignore the cool factor of the bigger specialized cartridge
.50 BMG rifles are heavy rigs and not on my list.

BS.....All of those comparisons are with the standard ball ammo vs the new high tech, high BC 408 and 416 bullets.

Try punching in your computer the high tech, high BC 50 cal bullets at around 2800 fps...compare apples to apples

50 BMG is a good calibre but you need a tight twist to stabalize those modern long high BC bullets.

You are probably right there, but I suspect that you would need a fast twist tube for either the 416 or the 408, also.

mmm , maybe i need an update in bullets tecnology , i don't know what hig tec .50 caliber bullets are you comparing the cheytac whit, if some one point me in the right direction would be great.

The 408 CheyTac is build for those modern long bullets, they make theit barrels to stabalize those no longer available Lost river ballistics bullets

1:15 is enough in a 50 BMG to stabalize the GS Custom SP Match bullet.
