Had a great opening weekend here in Montana. I was hunting in a special draw area and had successfully drew a Cow Elk Permit.
Sunday evening had a great stalk on a Cow at 1000 yards. Cut the gap to 780 yards and was all set for the shot.
Unfortunately the only shot presented had a calf too close to the Cow for a safe shot.
The following evening I found a single cow feeding out the bottom of a drainage.
Ranged her at 525 yards and was all set up for the shot. Slipped the 300 gr SMK in her armpit breaking the opposite shoulder. Awesome performance!!!

Here is the area I was hunting. Burned up 3 years ago.

Found this cat track hiking out of the drainage. 338 cartrige for reference.

Congratulations!

How tall is that bi-pod? It does not look as though you can get over the grass, how do you setup for the shot in the tall stuff? Thanks,

edge.

It's a 6"-9". To be honest it's almost useless in some field situations.
I was Antelope hunting 2 weeks ago in 11" of snow:D
On the Elk I was able to shoot of the crest off a ridge that worked well. I've also been using my daypack as a rest. Between the two, a guy can come up with something decent.

Thanks, in that terrain I can see that elevation can work in your favor...or not :)

I fired 13 rounds from my 270 at a herd of 75+ elk, on a cow permit, in Montana, and I have some pictures that look just like yours.

But at 585 yards, I should have been aiming 6' high, not 2' feet high.

Maybe I will take my 338 to the range. I have never shot it. I also need to do some long range target practice.

I may be misunderstanding your post, but were you just flinging lead at them?

Nice shot Game Dog, is that up near where you live?
