Pardon me if this is already an established thing... but wouldn't it be cool to set up across a canyon and have a friendly competition where a series of reactive metal targets are set up at different long range distances and you have to see how many times it takes to hit them (keep score like golf). On some you could have the choice of an easier (body) shot or a harder (head) shot. Could do animals (ala sihouette) too.

We need to get Defensive Edge to host a competition up here in N Idaho :)

Does this already exist and if not what would it take to get something going on private or forest service land (permits and what not)?

In 2007 we had the West Coast Tactical match south of Cheney, WA in some nasty scab rock canyons. Targets were steel targets, and shots varied from 140 yds at a 30 deg. down angle to 900+ yards. The course designers used the terrain very effectively to screw with the shooters (target might be out on a 'finger', with another 'finger' in front of it, but not visible from the shooters position so it looked like they were all on one plane - but any misses just 'disappeared'). Scoring was 50pts 1st round hit, 30 for 2nd, 20 for 3rd (max three shots allowed). Shooters got a sheet with each of five stations listed on it, and 3-4 compass bearings for each station. The compass bearings were to the targets (still had to find them in the trees & rocks) but only from that specific station. Two man teams, central control, movement between stations only when the range was confirmed 'cold', and shooting recommenced once everybody was in place and accounted for. One of the most aggravating (I was shooting a .308, and my buddies' gun wasn't working as advertised...), and fun matches I've shot in a while.

Locally (East Wenatchee, WA) we have a 'practical rifle' match every year. Not really a 'sniper' match, but not BR or F-Class either. Cold bore shots, 300yd group, 600yd steel, 450yd bowling pins, barricade shots, etc. Our scoring there is however you happen to score on an individual stage (say 4 out of 5 pins gets you 5th for that stage), thats your 'score' : 5pts. First place gets 1pt. 18th place gets 18 pts. Low agg for the day wins. Its entirely possible to win the overall match without winning any one stage, just staying consistently second or third and not having any train wrecks. Rewards consistency rather than someone who does really well on one stage and craps out on another.

What would that "proper rifle" look like and what caliber?

It depends on whether you want to use the course to improve your skills, see what your next step needs to be to extend your range or to Win.

A full long range set up is needed in addition to the rifle. Range finder, weather meter, angle indicator etc.

Ranges are from a couple of hundred to 1200. Shots that count have to hit the "vital" sized steel plate.

Any fashionable cartridge that will hit to 1K is fine. The rifle should shoot close to or less than .7 MOA, my arbitrary guess as I like !/2 MOA or less very well.

Any LRH or tactical configuration would be good.

Also the front rest/bipod should be able to handle 35+ degree shot angles both up and down.

Have a goal to build up something that shoots 1/4 MOA at 100 yards and am leaning towards something like a .338 Edge. Obviously a lot of rifles would work but so far this cartridge is saying yes to me (and to a lot of others on this list obviously based on the number of discussions).

Roy beat me to the reply :)

We have enough N Idaho folks up here that we should set up our own informal shoot some weekend. Maybe camp up at Priest.

Ya'll form a team up there. We'll form one down here.

Then we'll meet and we'll take your money, marbles and chalk.:D

One 'successful' round of this golf thing and you're confidence is way up there. Note, I said successful.

The Edge is a very good cartridge. Howver, I'd not have just anyone put it to gether. The majic is in the craftsmanship. Especially, if you want that 0.25" consistency from the get go. And, without a bunch of barrel wearing shots to tune it.

Roy, Is there a place down these parts to do this?

The way I see it is that a person gets every thing ready for LRH, as ready as one can get. That may differ for each individual. As in, I thought I was ready but wasn't as ready as I thought.

Then 5 guys get together as that is the min number to make it worth if for the range operation. At 50 or 55 $ each I realy believe its worth it.

If a person brings 30 loads he/she should go home with at least 8. That would be for one who isn't ready or just shoots too much. Ranges are unknown, until the range finder lets every one know.

The wind is the big if. It can vary enough to to cause a miss.

The only one in the "area" is 17 miles west of where I-15 meets I-84.

In typical Utah fashion people show up with more truck than is needed and hauling the latest over priced ATV. There is a two track between each station. I just used my Habitat Invasion Vehicle- Carrier (HIV- Carrier):D i.e., suzuki side kick.

Group travel would be in order. You get here, I'll get us there.

We just need more troops......

Rexburg has a 1K range where the do a local F-Class thing,

Blackfoot has a range but nothing is organized for LRH activities. In the mid 70s I rand the bench rest and hunter class events nearly ever summer weekend for 4 or 5 summers. I finally wised up and don't do that any longer.
