.358 Norma Mag

So I just picked up a .358 Norma Mag from an acquaintance that needed the money. I thought it was a really interesting cartridge and would be fun to toy around with and an excellent gun for elk. My question is...how far will these things shoot? Are they any good out to like 5 or 6hundy? Wont hurt my feelings either way...Just curious.

With a 200gr bullet at 3000 ft/sec you should be good to 500 or 600yrds
with just under 1500 ft/lbs of energy.

JE, Do you think that the BC's for 200 grain bullets is high enough? A 225 grain GameKing has a BC of around .370. Is that high enough ya think?

The BC of the 225 doesent help at 500 yards because of the 200 ft/sec velocity increase
of the 200 over the 225gr.

Calculated drop of the 200 gr @ 500 yards=40" and @ 600 yards=71.2" (1000yrds=353" )
Calculated drop of the 225 gr @ 500 yards= 46.9" and @ 600 yards=80.1" (1000=389" )

So At a 1000yards the 200 still has the edge but ether bullet lacks enough energy for ELK>

At some point the 225 may be flatter but not at 500 or 600yrds. And energy is allmost the
same at 500yrds that's why I recomended the 200 gr at your distance ( flatter and with
the same energy).

If you wanted to shoot farther with a 358 I would recomend the 358 STA it will shoot a 225
gr at the same speed as the 200gr in a norma mag and would be an easy re chamber job.

I didn't really intend to the gun being a longrange gun or anything. I was just wondering what bullets would make it the most effective and how far the thing can actually shoot. Thanks for the help. Its tough finding any info in depth info on these things. Not many people are familiar with them. Thanks.

I got a re-barreled Ruger 77 in 358 Norma. McGowan barrel. It is hell on wheels. I shoot mostly whitetails, but I have loaned the gun to friends who have taken moose, caribou, bear, elk and nilgai. The 225 Accubond will be your best bet for long range in my opinion. It will do over 2900 fps with several safe loads. I have used the discontinued 225 Ballistic tip and the Partition. I have had the best luck with 4350, 77gr. The trajectory will be very similar to the 30-06, but with alot more horsepower.
