A semi long range Elk

We had spotted this bull the evening that we rolled into our camp. He was hanging out at the very top of the mountain with about 15 cows, 6 calves, a spike and another smaller 6X6. We watched the harem as we set up, and listened to this bull bugle untill we fell asleep. We were up at first light the next morning to watch them some more, and wait unill they bedded down for the day. It was some imressive to watch this bull do his thing, he was THE bull of the mountain, and it was totally cool to watch him bugle in the spotting scope and then take a couple of steps before we could hear it.... more to come....

a few more details

We got this bull in British Columbia, I shoot a Browning Stainless Stalker .270 with a muzzle break topped with a Leupold 6X scope. Tried out Barnes 150 gr TSXs for the first time this year, and am quite happy witht the results.

The 3 red dots on the skyline indicate where we were and the single red dot indicate where the bull was when we shot him. It sure looks alot further than 400 yds in the picture.

I am fairly new to long range hunting, my wife just got me a Sendero SFII 300 RUM, I have a Bushnell 3200 3-9X40 on it untill I get a load worked up for it, and save enough money for the scope that I want (not sure what that is yet NF? Leupy? S&B? Bushnell?)

I'm glad you guys like the pictures, it was tons of fun and I cant wait to go back....

Ya thanks we have been going into the same area for quite a few years, I am lucky enough that my dad has horses and we get into some sweet spots.

Ah, I see. You go to BC every year to hunt elk. Does your dad still live there? I assume that since you live in AB now that you need to be hunter hosted to hunt there??

You bet Slope, I head back to BC every year. Is a little different to get hosted in BC. Your host is required to apply for a "Permit to accompany" stating which zones you would like to hunt, species that you would like to hunt, and the duration of the hunt (most your allowed is 21 days). Getting the permit takes about 4-6 weeks, and costs abot $40, and then the license and tag are another $350, and another $125 royalty after pulling the trigger.

Its works out quite well for us with my folks in BC, and myself in AB. I can put my dad in for certain draws here in AB like Mule deer, Elk, Moose, Antelope, and Sheep. So every few years we can hunt elk in BC in Sept, moose in AB during Oct, and wrap it up with a southern AB mule deer/ whitetail hunt.

We are certainly looking forward to getting drawn for elk down in that "special" zone in AB. and one day when he gets drawn for sheep, we will bring our Swat team (horses) and do an all in hunt for some of those giant rams.
