Having my son with me when I make a 647 yd, one shot kill on my biggest bull yet,,,,,
PRICELESS!!!
We started, out of bed at 0330. A thirty minute four wheeler ride and then an hours hike to the top of a glassing peak. My son (10)was a real trooper. As soon as the sun rose, we had elk all around us. We had opportunities on two 5x5's and a 4x4, but they weren't what we were looking for. I then started glassing the ridges to the south of us and spotted a good 6x6 with about forty cows. Bad part was, we had to go all the way back down and past the four wheeler to climb another ridge that was between us and the elk. I ranged the ridge the elk were on at about 1750yds and the in between ridge at about 1000yds. Perfect! We were off, down the mountain as fast as we could and then trudged up the other ridge. Just below the crest, we ditched the packs and I snuck up to the edge. The elk were still there and a quick range showed from 600 to 700. I retrieved my rifle and crawled into a good position and got set up. I then glassed again and found the bull behind a tree. Range to the tree was 650yds. Dialed my elevation and double checked, no wind on my end or his. Now I had to wait for the shot, which gave me time to get my breathing under control (from the hike and the excitement. Finally the bull moved and offered a broadside shot. I settled in (high shoulder), exhaled and broke the shot. I was able to see the bullet cut the morning air, right to the bull. I saw a puff on his hide and he immediately dropped. I chambered another round and waited, but it was not necessary. Having my son there with me was by far the best part. He helped out with all the chores except packing the head and quarters down to where we could get the four wheeler closeby. Need to let him pack on some more pounds before I start loading him.
It was a great hunt. My longest shot on an animal so far and my biggest bull so far.
