what all can be done to the savage 110? i have a 30-06 that shoots good, but i want to improve this rifle for longer ranges. heavy barrel? trigger? action improvements? any help is great help. thanks, jason

Their like any other action ,they can be trued the bolt/firing pin timed correctly . Realy depends what your wanting to do with it and howmuch you want to spend.
You can simply order a new prefit barrel , tune up the trigger a bit and it will likely shoot under 1 moa depending on the stock. I swapped out barrels for a buddys Savage the other day started life as a factory heavy barreled 25-06 , he dropped it in a Choate Varmiter stock and it shoot around .75" at 100yds , I swapped out the barrel for a Pac-Nor prefit he ordered in 280 Ackley , tuned the trigger and now it shoots in the .500" range with several loads we threw together , with some better load tuning I'm sure it shoot sub 1/2 moa consistantly.
His barrel is a stainless super match , 28" fluted full bull , 1-9 twist 6 groove , he wants to shoot the 162 A-max for long range deer , hes using Nosler brass and N-165 powder , 3000 fps was easly reached with around 61grs of powder.
The 162 A-max at 3000 fps will easly kill deer to 1000yds
So a new barrel , a little trigger work and depending on the stock that should do you right.
Whats the trouble with the 30-06 ? , whats the barrel length? the old 06 isin't a real popular sexy round now days but it'll still get the job done way out their if the gun is set up right.

jason i bought a savage 110 as i recall in 58 or 59, shortly after they hit the market. mine was a lefty in 06. if yours shoots well, i would leave it alone other than a little tweeking if necessary. an 06 isnt an ideal long range hunting cartridge. use it and enjoy it for what it is. it will certainly perform well to 500 yds. or so if scoped properly. get a decent scope with target knobs and 1/4 min. clicks. learn how to use it well. if you arent familiar w/ adding elevation to scopes for various ranges, just ask on this site. if you load, some of the excellant match bullets like the 168 sierra will perform well for you. when and if you want a gun capable of more performance, just invest in another gun. dont turn your back on savage when you do. they make an excellant and affordable long range rifle in numerous calibers.

The first thing I do is tune the trigger. There is a guy on savageshooters that is giving away spring wire if you send him a SASE. Pretty easy to get a crisp sub 3 pound pull.
The next thing I would do is get it into a decent stock. Plain wood is fine but IMHO a good synthetic or laminate is much better. I think that the Stockades are the best Savage stocks for the price. Get the money saver and do the finish work yourself. Go ahead and bed it also. Remember, the rear tang on a Savage needs to float. Not bedded like a Remington.
If it is still not shooting as well as you'd like, start looking for a new barrel. I shoot the factory stainless fluted 26" varmint barrels in 220 Swift, 22-250, and 300win. All shoot .5 MOA or less.
I've also done a "bolt lift" kit on all my Savage rifles. It is a simple procedure to reduce the amount of force needed to lift the bolt during cocking.

I would consider the 280 AI barrel mentioned earlier by James. The 162 AMAX, 154 Interbond, Berger 140/168, and 150 etip are good options.

will this action work with any replacement shilen barrel, or just non magnum? also as far as truing an action, about what is the cost roughly? im wanting to make this an awesome rifle and i sure appreciate yalls help and insite. what are the comparisons of the 280 ai against the 280 rem? thanksgun)

Your Savage action can handle nearly any caliber imaginable. They have come factory chambered from .223 up to 338 RUM. Most people believe that the RUM sized chambers are the top end of what the action can handle. They can all be done with the same action by just swapping barrels and bolt heads.
Fred at Sharp Shooter Supply charges about $100. This is a time and true. Generally this isn't considered necessary for accuracy, it just makes the action work smoother. Most accuracy can be gained yourself by tuning or replacing the trigger and swapping in a better barrel.
The bolt lift kit is simply a 357 or 38 pistol case with the wall of the case trimmed all the way off just leaving the case head. Then a 5/16" ball bearing($0.16 at my hardware store). Is epoxied or locktite into the primer pocket. Put it in between the bolt that holds the bolt handle on and the cocking sleeve inside the bolt. You'll need to trim the thickness of the case rim from the end of the bolt or the same thickness washer under the head of the same bolt.
Like I said in an other thread. I could have made and installed a few of them in the time I took to type this.
Also, Savage Shooters is a good resource and worth the $12 membership. Check out their monthly email match competition. It's a ton of fun.

Jason only approx 75 FPS difference between the AI and 280Rem in a 22" barrel. The advantage to the AI is the brass works better (less streaching) and seems to handle pressure better. The AI in a 26" Shilen should get you 3000 fps with the 160 grain bullets. If you are thinking long range and are sticking with the 06 family of cases I would go with a 26" min barrel lenght to get max performance from that case. You are probably running a 22" factory barrel in your 06 now. Going to a match grade barrel, AI chambering, and 26" barrel should combine to significantly improve your ballistics. Additional benefits to staying with the 06 cases is the barrel life and no magazine feeding issues.
PS: If you choose the 280 AI you can still shoot 280 Rem ammo in a pinch.

for long range deer hunting and some target shooting what would be best. i want a 1000 yd gun if possible.

to rebarrel this rifle, does any work need to be done to the bolt/ action, other than truing it? can this action handle a .300 ultra? recoil is not a worry of mine, i am a big fellow and am building a heavy gun. thanks

Jason a 6.5-06AI is a ballistic equal to the 6.5-284 which is the most popular 1000 yard benchrest cartridge these days. For deer it can delivery 900 lbs KE at 1000 yards. This would be a very simple conversion. The magazine works, the action will not need to be opened up, no bolt modifications and for deer it would delivery adaquate KE certainly to 800 yards. The 6.5 bullets from berger and others are unmatched for BC when taking SD into account.
You could simply buy a barrel, headspace it, install an aftermarket trigger, and see how it does. Chances are it will be a winner from the get go. If not then I would have the action trued and maybe new stock or bedding job. You can get a Shilen 28" barrel for only a $20.00 up charge over the 26" barrel to max out this combo. The ultra mag will require a new bolt lug, the action will need to be opened up, new magazine assemlby, and you will still have the standard shank action which was replaced by Savage shortly after it introduction.(I am sure for some good reason) In addition the barrel life will be 1/2 that of the 6.5-06.
