Savage custom barrel

I need to know how big (contour) of a barrel can I hang onto a Savage target action, without using a barrel sleeve? Either with or without the barrel nut. Barrel will be heavy contour and 30" long.

65joe, You can hang a full 1.25" barrel by 30" long on the savage without any problems, fitted with a shoulder.

I have done this with my savage in 243AI. Shoots 107 @ 3180fps and accuracy is exceptional. I did skim coat the action and 2" of barrel when bedding.

My 30-06 barrel is 28 inches long, 1.25 at the action, which is the shank size, & tapers to .75 at the muzzle to match my muzzle brake. Recoil is non-existent.

Any barrel with a tenon end that is over 1.200" the barrel nut wrench will not fit over the barrel.

I do what the customer wants. For barrel tenons on barrels of 1.200 or 1.250 I turn the tenon about an extra .010 so I have some room for adjustment and the barrel nut has no frontal interfearance. The barrel nut does not affect accuracy. It just makes it so any monkey can head space the rifle in 25 seconds. Time is money in gun making.

Why is that a problem? I like the fact that a guy can swap out calibers himself.
