Had been hunting for about 5 minutes when this one walked in front of the truck. Shirley basin in Wyoming. 7:15 am. .25-'06 with 117gr GKs at a measured 284 yards. Her first game animal and she was flying high for the rest of the day.

Just had to share.

Excellent! Looks like great country and a great day!

So, what is the 'next' game animal on her radar?

Thanks for sharing,

AJ

Wow. It took me a second to realize that there was an antelope in that picture. Nice trophy! (Cool rifle and antelope, too.)

I think I've actually created a monster. She was saying how sad she was that she had to wait another "365 days" to hunt again. And, she's planning out the next trip already, how many days we'll take off, how many tags she's going to buy, how she needs to get her own rifle, etc.

Last night we watched some Versus On Demand hunting shows, and she decided it would be fun to hunt Cape Buffalo.

Hey, thanks for the compliment. I really don't know what she's doing with me, but I'm not going to question it. Girls who like to hunt are rare indeed.

Great, if she likes to read. Get her a copy of "Horn of the Hunter". If she likes that (she will !!!) then start her on Capstick ("Death in the long grass" etc. ).

If you haven't read them yet, they are a great way to pass the time between hunting seasons.

The other two women in Hicks life. His mother took two at 170 yards in 15 seconds. Bang 1, swing, bang 2. The little white dot to the left of the pickup in the first picture is antelope 2 and it was neck shot. Springfield 03A3 cut down and 50 years ago by her dad, VXII 3-9, Sierra 150 GK.

Notice the now blue tee shirt was white in Hicks GF picture. If you look real close you will see some red on it. Oops, scope cut. And, she still wants to go back.

His six year old daughter wants to go next year also. She helped cut up meat for 2 hours. I can see I need a bigger pickup and more coolers.

Smart man. When you find someone that takes an interest in what you love, grab on with both hands. Worked for me, I've been married to my favorite shooting buddy for nine years and counting...

Hicks,

Yep, after I came to notice it was a nice goat in the pic.:)

Also, way to go on being surrounded by nifty women. Though I doubt you deserve it.:D

Nah, not a bigger truck but, more $ for the stuff it's gonna take to outfit that outfit. That would be Hicks & Company...........

I'm thinkin that she'll ultimately end up with some kind of supper hooty magnum rather than one of those itty bitty WSM. May well skip all of the intermediate stuff and give Shawn/Kirby/Nate and some others on here and get a bigun for her.

You should be very grateful to have women like that in your life as I believe they are few and far between.

My wife doesn't hunt and she won't let me shoot the deer around the house. I guess they are her pets. She does fish some though.

Great story.

Well, I took her out to shoot some Prairie Dogs last weekend. The town was pretty slow but she managed to kill one at 263 yards in high wind, which she doped. DRT. Now we have to get her two rifles.

Now I have to hijack this thread for myself. Here's a couple pics of the bucks this year from the Thunder Basin just north of Douglas Wyoming:

HPIM0558.jpg

My buddies first big game animal, same rifle as the GF used. He was kind enough to let her borrow it. He has limited experience with rifles. This buck fell at 300 yards exactly. Sort of funny, we had that rifle dead on at 300 and in all the excitement I told him to "Hold right on his back!" Pretty stupid, but the wind was blowing so hard that the bullet drifted right into its head. Bang Flop, and CSPSgt administered the coup'de grace with the Walther in the neck. My buddy was one happy camper.

This is mine. We worked this buck for about 4 hours and just could not get him to come off the little section of private the was in the middle of 10 square miles of public. CPSSgt finally said "Ok Boys, here's how we're going to do this." I had laid down in the public and my buddy and CSPSgt worked them off the ridge and into the lower public. I ranged several shooting lanes, and unfortunately the herd crossed a bit further than what I ranged and this buck never stopped. I had to shoot him while he was walking because it was the last day, right at last light and sure didn't want to miss the opportunity. I'm guessing it was right at 500 yards because after the shot I ranged back to about where I was shooting from. Can't be certain of the distance, but this is the longest shot I've ever managed. Remington CDL, 7mm RUM, 160gr Accubonds over a good dose of Retumbo, chronnied at almost exactly 3200 fps. Since I didn't know the range exactly, and I didn't have time to dial up what I thought the right range was I did it old school. "Well, he's about that far, I'm about 4 minutes low at that range, hold at the top of the back and squeeze..." One more nice buck off to the Taxidermist. He's not book quality, but I was looking for something at a good distance and he fit the bill. That's a trophy in my book

As an aside, I would highly recommend either the Shirley Basin or the Thunder Basin National Grasslands for Antelope. My tag was a "leftover", and when I bought it there were 320 either sex licenses left for that area.
