Since I know very little about rifles, "Zen of Shotguns" here are my questions!

First Question,

Last year, I purchased a 7x57 Mauser for my wife's first rifle. The gun is currently at the shop getting a timney trigger job. I was thinking about having it rechambered into another caliber. What are my options, the gun is going to be used to poke paper and shoot whitetails out to about 500 yards.

Second Question,

I don't know how many rounds have been through the current barrel. I want to get a new barrel, especially if I plan on rechambering it. What type of twist rate should I be looking at?

Thanks in advanced,
Z

And what's wrong with the 7X57 for the intended purpose/

To answer your question will require more information, such as what is the rifle action? Also if possible I personaly would go with a Shillen trigger over a Timmeny

Its a Mauser 98 bolt action.

then you could rechamber to a 280 if you desired, but I would shoot as is and if I wanted a 280 at smoe point then I would rebarrel.

Their are many top quality barrel makers I will list a few.

Rock Creek
Kreiger
Lilja
Brouton
Hart
Obemeyer
Bartlien
As well as others, take your pick, I would always choose a match grade barrel over a non match grade IMHO
