I'm currently having 2 long range rifles built and I'm looking for dependable optics. There are so many choices now, when I got my custom 7RM I put a MK4 4.5-14x40 on it and never thought twice but now there are alot of scopes in this price range. The 2 that have caught my attention are the Burris 6-24x50 XTR and the Sightron S3 6-24x50. Both have side focus, turrents, 30mm main tube, and the magnification range I'm looking for. I belive the Burris has 1MOA elavation and 1/2MOA windage adjustment. Sightron are 1/4MOA adjustments. Question are they dependable (do reticles break loose, repeatablity, etc)? How good is the glass in either one of these? Any thoughts are welcome as I'm really not leaning toward either one just doing some research.

Burris

I have a Burris BlackDimmond 4x16x50 w/side pa. on a 257ROY. This scope was made for this rifle. I love the BlackDimmond. It has 1/4 ELV & wind ajustments. I though about getting XTR. but dont like the 1"MOA. If you like Burris I'd go with the blackdimmond or Euro Dimmond. I dont know anybody with a Sightron.

I looked through an XTR today (3-12x) and it was super nice. football dots, 1/4moa with easy to grip knobs, very sturdy with the Posi-lock! I loved that reticle - so fine at the cross hairs and then big coarse lines outside.

I came sooo close to buying it on the spot but I'm sure I can find a better price than $759 at sportsman's...

Thanks for all the replies. I wanted to get the 3-18x42 IOR for my 7mmSTW project, really loved the pics of the reticle, but until they figure out the issues w/ that scope I'm holdin off. I may just order a vx3 6.5-20x40 Leupy custom shop. I figure get the leupy then maybe IOR will have the bugs worked out by the time my 300RUM is ready. Picking a scope is the hardest decision there is when it comes to this.

You seem to be pretty high on the Vortex Viper scopes, I will probably be buying a scope in that price range this fall. You like the Vortex better than the Sightron SIIIs?

The Sightron SIIIs are excellent, but they cost much more than the Vipers. I think the Vortex is a better value, but the SIII will be quite pleasing also.

i have both the xtr in 6-24x and a slll in 6-24x and the 8-32x both are the new models, the older model is good but the new glass and a few other things were changed on the new models for the good. put it this way i have burris, nikon, had leupolds and sightron scopes and by far sightron is far superior to any of the mentioned scopes above. i really like my xtr but it is not in the the same class as the sightrons by any means but the xtr is a tuff scope and i like it a lot but i sure love them sightrons a little better, if you look through one you'll understand what i mean by awesome!. Check out the reviews jason did on 6mmbr and go to daily buliten and click on optics or search google type in 8-32x56 sightron reviews,it had many things better than the nightforce and his second review said that the scope tracked better than what his gun could shoot. and believe me my sightrons track more percise than any other scope i own. Thats why i got rid of my 8-25x and 6-20x leupold vx3s to get my 2 sightrons and that was the best thing i have ever done in scope choosing.
