Retumbo loads for 300 Win Mag.

I'm thinking about trying 185 vlds in my 300 win mag, I thought about using Retumbo, but can't seem to find any load data. If anyone is using this or nows where to find some load data, would like to know what your using or where I can fan find some.

You might try calling Berger. They emailed me load info for my 300 WSM.

I'm using 82gr of Retumbo behind the 210vld. As always work up, and jyour mileage may vary.

Have you gone to the hodgdon website?? If I remember right the earlier data they had they did not recomend it for 180 grainers but they may have changed the data lately. It is ever so slightly slower than H1000 so when I play with retumbo I start towards the upper end of H1000 loads and work up. I did have a strange experience with retumbo that has put a bit of fear in me. I had a load that worked good with the 200 accubond and had no problems. I tried the exact same load under a 180 tsx thinking the lighter bullet and rings on the tsx would really make for a safe starting point....wrong...didn't blow primers but darn close and came darn close to duplicating 300 wby speeds!! It could be one of those strange powders that stays calm under highly compressed loads but "comes alive" when not.

Yes..it shocked me too. I've read reports (with skeptisism) of people who seem to go past max loads when highly compressed and see no jump in speed or apparent pressure. If you understand the 300 win mag cartridge at about 83 grains of powder and trying to cram a long 200 grain bullet down to 3.340 you can imagine the compression. Don't know if that's the factor I saw or not. Perhaps I was way past max with my 200 grain load but it somehow didn't react...but then dropping to a 180 I had the super speedy result. 180 tsx's should NOT be doing 3225 out of a 24" barrel in a 300 win mag!

Does anyone else out there have any reloading data for 200 - 210 gr bullets for the .300 Win. Mag.?

Retumbo seems to me to be a VERY compressed load.

Try a Sierra 200gr SpBT Gameking in front of 75gr of IMR 7828 in a WW case and a Federal #215 mag primer. This is an absolute max load (62kpsi on my Pressure Trace II) and top load in the Sierra Manual so start at least 1gr down. Clocks a solid 2900fps over the Chrony with a SD around 13fps. I am going to try Superformance next.

If you have IMR-7828 or RL-22 you should go with either of these 2 powders. I worked up a load with the same bullet in my 300 using 7828 as I was out of Rl-22 at the time. Both work really well with bullets in the 180-190 grain weight range. I have also seen retumbo get weird in the 300 win going from compresed to not compressed when the pressure comes it comes fast with little warning versus other go to powders for the 300 win. Was enough of a warning to me to put retumo to the side for my 300 win with the slowest powder that I now use being H-1000 and it does not show those issues in a sudden nature even though they are both close in burn speed in the 300 win case. Perhaps my stock of retumbo is a bit faster than average who knows. I had to rework all my H-1000 loads from a few years back as the newer lots I have burn faster than the powder I had been using. I won't post my 7828 load here as it is over Bergers max and a bit over Hodgdon's max with a 190 Hornady but has proven safe in my rifle and rips ragged one hole groups at 100 yards and is a consistant 1-1/2" 400 yard load.

Retumbo and a 300win... Good combo on 180 to 200 grain pills. work up 180's from 200 grain start loads from the hodgdon site. My brother was fond of retumbo with the 200 speer hot core in his #1 ss 300win; it was accurate enough that we were using it for prarie dogs when they'd only stick up their nose ( 1/4 mile +) and I couldn't touch them with my 22-250 pistol. Body shots through the mound were the norm.

I use Retumbo in my 300 WM and get excellent results. My load is 79gr of Retumbo, Fed215, 210 Berger Hunting VLD's, .010" off the lands , Norma brass. I get 2902FPS and ES of 8FPS out of my 26" barrel. I have gotten good accuracy with the Berger 185's using 82 gr of Retumbo but did not measure the velocity. I would expect it to be 3050-3100. I would start a couple of grains lower and work up.

Retumbo also works great with 230s. I use 75.2 grains with the Berger 230 OTM to get 2825 fps.
