Some advice needed on getting my 1s rig

Hey people , I posted an intro in the above forum ,so those that have read it know I have some experiance with reasonable distant shooting.

Well I would like you alls advice on my ideas.
1st my long range rig will be used for deer/elk hunting (i would like to be out to 750yds in time) and target shooting (out to 1k).
I decided to go withb the 300 win mag because I already have a sporter in that caliber and have all the reloading essentials for it.

I would like to build my LR rig on a M70 action w/claw extractor.

Now for some Qs,
Where can I find a M70n action ? ( perferably jeweled bolt)
What rifle weight should I shoot for (w/o the glass)
Barrel length recomendations (I would like a break on it so I need to kow actuall barrel length w/o the break)
And stock configurations ( Im wanting a thumbhole)
Recommended Gun Smiths or companys that can get the job done.

I would like a rifle that I will ot have to send back and forth to the smith for modifications.

(Im also looking real hard at the H&S precision varmint in 300 win mag, 24" barrel + m/break.)

Im looking at spending no more than 3k for just the rifle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated Im currently in Iraq by the way so thats why Im asking so much of you all.

If you would like a thumbhole stock contact Joel Russo. He can modify the foreend width and height to suit you. He can offer you lots of different color combinations of laminates.

I rasped and sanded the grip to where it fits my right hand extremely well.

It works really well. It has taken 8 antelope at 150 yds, 250 yds, 350 yds, 600 yds, 686 yds, 800 yds, 800 yds and 1140 yds.

here is the deal you need to find a qualified smith. pm 308 nate,shawn carlock or kirby, i personally havent had work done by shawn or kirby but there reputation is good. then figure out what stock will fit you needs.you already want to 70 action. they could probably order it for you. as far as your other parts ask your smith on there recomendations thats why you spend alittle more monwy and get the guys who have built so many long range guns. these 3 that i listed are in my opinion at the top. i just know that all the things that i have seen writted about shawn or kirby are excellant and i have 3 3/4 guns built by 308nate.
find a good smith and they will make this proccess easy. remember they do this everyday. some of us have 2-3 guns built a year. most smiths build a whole lot more that that per year.

as far as weight and length i shoot a 7mmwsm built by nate that weighs in at 12.8 with my nightforce. it has a 28in broughton barrel and then i had nate build a v port brake. as for now i think that is my favorite.

i will be talking to shawn in the future because i want eather a 338 edge or a 338 lapua.

Thanks BuffaloBob , that is some great looking work on those stocks. I plan on getting my LR rig camo dipped so more tha likely go with a composite.

To be honest , Its kinda hard for me to tale a leap of faith so to speak. Handing a guy a few K and hopeing that you get what you paid for. The local smith back home is honestly a S!!T head . HE will not put 100% efforet into everyones work.And only helps who he feels needs it.When you sjow up at hes shop he has this look of "Oh god we have a customer" on his face. Enough Ranting.
I will be getting intouch with those smiths for some ideas and what not. I still havent left the idea of just investing in a H&S precision, or maybe even sending an sendero to HCR.

Here is what my current build looks like , parts are gonna start heading to Nathan Dagely's (308nate) shop soon I hope

Phoenix reciever with side bolt release , 1.403" thread tennon , .312" recoil lug pinned , round top with target port for rigidity and a thicker Remington style tang $437.50 shipped to your FFL of choice.

Pacific Tool and Guage bolt , TIG welded bolt handel with threaded end for several differant bolt knobs , M-16 stype extractor which in my finding is the next best thing to a full control round feed action , cost is right at $200 for everything and welding.

Top quality barrel from maker of your choice $325 shipped

Seekins detachable bottom metal +2 extra mags and his base made for this action $510.46

Manners T4 stock with adjustable comb $615

Add another $400 for the action/barrel fitting and chamber plus bedding the action to the stock , and for right at $2500 you will have a gun built as good as any police , military or contract sniper could ask for fully capible for killing Elk at 1000yds providing the correct chamber.

Granted the above rig is an all out police sniper rifle chambered for 308 you could cut alot of cost probably right at $1000 just by using factory Rem bottom metal and an HS or Joel Russo stock. , Heck you could even go with a $150 Douglas barrel from Brownells and a factory take off laminated stock and save another $300 and I'd be willing to bet it would outshoot any factory rem out their.

Another option I'm thinking about if buying a Rem 5R rifle in 308 which are generaly great shooters from the box and open it up for a 300 WSM.

But in any event you will be much happier with a custom action over a factory trued action for the same money and god forbid you have to sell it you'll get alot of your money back from the custom action over a built up factory one.

The only prob I may face in buying my own parts for a build will be myself stationed here in Iraq. I have another 10 mnths or so left out here. Im still waying out my options and have been doing ALOT of research when I have the chance around here. Right now Ive dropped the isea of the sendero for obvious reasons. I am torn between conatcting H&S for a semi custom (as they state gaurenteed .5" moa) or getting with a smith on a build. I woiuld like to tome everything to where I may possably have my LR rig ready to go by the time of my return home. Time will tel

Update,
As of now I have been intouch with HS for the past couple days exchanging ideas and what not. They have made me an offer on what I would like. Im kinda scared to post the amount they are asking for on a forum so I will keep it to myself for now . But, I do believe it is quite a bargan for what they have to offer and compared to the normal price of their rifles.

I am also waiting to hear back from a smith that was refered to me as well
