I have a Ruger MKII 243, rifle i just traded for , the gun came from a friend who after a while the gun started throwing bullets like a shotgun! I told him to float the barrel, and it wouldl probably ease the stress on the barrel while shooting and make it shoot better. He never did and I ended up with it, So for giggles I built up just in front of the receiver with buisness cards to float the foreend. When I shot it I got excellent results, my question is can I just replace the buisness cards with aluminum foil to releive stress on the forend instead of having to sand out the pressure pad and barrel channel?

Might look a little funny being raised out of the barrel channel.

Why not just replace your business cards & tinfoil with JB Weld or some other bedding? Plop a glob of bedding compound in there and don't look back.

Or you could wrap some sand paper around a wooden dowel, or what ever will fit in the existing barrel channel, and relieve the stock until the barrel no longer makes contact.

my exp is opposite...

i have a rem 700 sendero in 7RM....bedded and floated the barrel and could not get consistent groups....tried every load i could think of...then finally put fore-end tip pressure on it with business cards. that did the trick! groups now in the 1/2" range...go figure. im still shooting it with the cards in place. gonna bed the barrel all the way out to the end next. I've used a piece of rubber innertube before. It worked wonders for the groups. Mike

Aluminum foil is only good for making hats to keep them from reading your thoughts. Only Reynolds, not the cheap Safeway stuff.

You might want to consider that you now have the action supported by the shank of the barrel and the rear tang. This could lead to a lot of action flex and torque on the wrong components.

only reynolds wrap !!!!!!!!!! Trust me !!!!!!!!!!!!!

BuffaloBob you are saying by putting a slight shim in front of the action will put undo stress on the rest of the gun? I might as well just sand out the barrel channel to free float the barrel, huh? I guess what I am asking is that have i diagnosed the problem with the paper shims to float the barrel? Next step is to just go ahead and do it.
