A desert elk hunt? I've never heard of such a thing. I guess I have and continue to lead a sheltered life(lol) . Any way, why not use Sierra 165 Game Kings. I can think of no better bulet and it should already be sighted in since you shoot SMK's.

I'll be elk hunting near Ft Collins this fall and that country is fairly open country. I'm working up a load with 180 gr Nosler Partitions and 180 gr Accubond's.
I'm shooting a 22" Winchester Model 70 featherweight 30-06 and with a zero of 3" high at 100 yds I am getting about a 6-7" drop at 300 yds. I have no idea what range shot you are expecting so my info may be useless.

i've recently started working up a load for Elk in my 22", 30-06. it's a Remmy though. anyways, i got some 168gr tipped triple shocks from Barnes because it's Elk, not deer. so far i'm impressed with them, both in accuracy and terminal performance. without any load work i can shoot between 2-3 inches at 300 yards with the bullets starting at 2925. shot into some jugs and plywood at 30 and 540 yards. both bullets look the same, in fact you can't tell them apart. perfect 4 pedal mushroom with a flat front on the bullet. i feel confident with them out to 600. i can also say they're not the cheapest option out there!
Way too much water in the Artic to be a desert IMHO. During hunting season in the Artic you can't hardly step anywhere with out a bit of water..
I have 7 years of working and hunting experience in the Artic and that is the basis of my answer
I was just being a smart ***, I may be wrong, but I thought the average precip was very low in the antartica (which I should have said) but oh well

I know it sounds funny. The first time I saw an elk in the desert it looked way out of place. They were originally plains animals before we drove them into the thick stuff.
Elevation around 6800 ft sagebrush and quakey patches open valley and
long draws.
Closed to motor vehicle travel, foot or horse back, have horses to pack out
any animals down.
Not a lot of people hunting this unit and a lot of private land..

What weight of SMK are you shooting?
If its 160+, I'd shoot what you are used to.

At 30-06 velocities the 168's dont work well past 350 yards and niether do the 190's for that matter. They WILL pencil straight on through. Elk are too tough to leave reliable expansion as a question.
Dont get me wrong here I still use SMK's on occasion for hunting. It just boils down to the right weight with the right caliber at the right distances. Most 30 cal SMK's will not work well past 350 yards at 30-06 speeds.
