I built a 34. in 3/3 Pac-Nor .30-.378 on a big Hall Single shot. The barrel is straight 1.25 at the muzzle. I have reloaded and shot lots of .300 Weatherby, but never a .30.-378. I am looking for some tips. Here is what I have so far.

Redding type S neck bushing die set.
8 lbs of H50bmg powder (the most likely powder I believe to work in this combo)
1 lb of Retumbo (will try in both the 300 and .30-.378)
1 lb H1000 (will try in both the .300 and .378)
2-3 lbs of 7828 I use in the .300

I have the .30-.378 reemed to shoot Sierra 240's. The barrel is a 1-10 twist. I am hoping for at least 3200 fps out of the 240's ???

Any other bullets I ought to try? might try some 220 Sierra's as well. Is there a ULD RBB bullet that is heavier than 240 ?

Thanks,

John

Henson bullets

You might want to try the heaviest Henson Al tipped 308 that will work in the 10 twist. I'm most interested in the 220. But they are saying that bullet needs an 8 twist. Check out the current post about the AL tipped bullets. That post is just a little down on this page.

Or you could try the Wildcat bullets. Not sure how much more aerodynamic they are than the SMK's, but I would guess it's a fair amount of BC gain.

John, Sounds like a fine rig. The H-50 bmg or H-5010 are good powders, so is US 869. Haven't shot 240's, but have shot 190 and 220 Smkhp's. The H-5010 and H-50 bmg both need Fed 215M primers (or 215's). I'm having to try the 215's because I'm just about out of 215M's. The 869 may work with CCI LRM primers or Win LR's. Don't know yet. The Retumbo or H-1000 didn't work in my gun. The best hunting bullet looks like the 200 Accubond. My .30 x .378 has a 27 1/2" 10 twist Walther barrel.

Good shooting, Tom

John,
I believe Richard makes a 265 gr and a 290 gr ULD bullet in 30 cal. I was looking at a fast twist 300 RUM two years ago. I don't know if a 1-10 twist would stabilize those bullets, wouldn't bet on the 290.
The 240 gr SMK has a pretty nice BC and ought to come blazing out of that 34" Wby at a pretty good clip. Just a guess, I would think you could hit 3300 fps. Pretty awesome!

I have a 32" HS percision on one of my 30-378's. I shoot 210 Bergers with 98 gr of H-1000 and a 215 Fed gm. I get 3130 for an average Vel. and it shoots 1/2 moa. I know it is not what you asked for bullet wise, but maybe you can adjust. I will add it is very happy there and I have never pushed it further but I feel there is some room left.

I thought about the 210 Bergers, I shoot them in my 300 Weatherby. Your load must be pretty mild, I get 3000 out of them in my 25.5 in 300 Weatherby. I think a long barrel 30 378 ought to get 3300+

I plan on trying 220 and 240 Sierra also

John,

If you have the 1.750" Hall "G" then you are lucky individual and I am sure a proud owner. I have three Hall "E"s as I missed out on the "G" models but I do have the Hall "E" repeater. Anyway, I have a very similar setup as yours. 32" Kreiger with the 30/378. I get 3274.9 out of the 220 Henson bullets that should BC up to a low .9 to high .8. It sits in a McMillan McHale stock with nightforce optics and jewell trigger.

We get over 3400 with the 212 in a mid .8 BC and who knows what is possible (3600 +)with the 180 with the .711 BC (240 SMK equivalent BC). For me, I like the 220s since it will be easier on the barrel.

Almost forgot, the Retumbo works so well, I got 48 lbs of it. That should answer your question on powder. It just seems for my applications that Retumbo beats everything else for the Lapua and 378 Weatherby cases. Of course, we hunt in 100 degree temperature swings and that influences us to use the extreme powders by Hodgdon.

Hope this helps. Drop me an email and we can get into more detail.

Almost forgot, I shot some of the Wildcat ULD 265s and the peak velocity for my accuracy requirements was 3000. However, the BC on the 265s is not as good as the BC on the 220 Henson bullets. Plus, you can push the Henson aluminum tips faster (about 274.9 fps). Email for the bulletsmith is:

I have the E as well......can't understand why he won't build the G anymore. Mine is also in a McHale stock, Jewel trigger and NF scope. I thought the velocities would be a little higher, I was hoping for 3200+ with a 240 SMK. Have you ever tried H50BMG powder ? How much Retumbo are you using with the 220's ?

I may have to try some of the aluminum tips bullets down the road. 3400 fps and a mid .8 bc would be killer

Actually, he was time limited and since there were so few .22 rimfire custom actions being manufactured and so many of the larger actions as the express in production, he decided to drop the express and spend that time on the 22RF. If the 22RF reaches a saturation point, he may be connived into building some more G's.

I use 105.0 (-0.00 grains, +.02 grains) grains of Retumbo with the 220 @ .060 off the lands. The aluminum tipped bullets seem to be more bearing length limiting than bullet weight limiting. Anyway, run the numbers (just for fun) on say a 220 with a .927 BC at 3274.9. They will surpass the energy of the 280 (BC of .878 at 3100 fps) shot out of the same gun using the same size 378 case at 1700 yards. On the windage and the drop, it is like beating up a ten year old. I don't see any new .338 barrels in the future for me (unless I go ahead with the four bolt BAT project), but I do see several 8" twist .30 cals.

If you saw how accurate the 220s were out of the 30/378 case, you would be sold. The accuracy nodes for my barrel are easy to locate and they are very wide......... Very easy to load for. We had some scope issues in the last two weeks and that has delayed the final .30 cal testing at longer ranges..... We will be doing it later this upcoming week.

You really need to get on the list for some 220s and you won't be disappointed.

FWIW, the 30/378 is what Alan Hall uses for his long range work. He has been shooting it for years.

Just to eliminate any confusion, the 220s will not stabilize out of a 10" twist barrel. The 180s will do just fine.

However, if your location and altitude were conducive, we would be interested in sending you a few of the 210s to see if you can get them stable out of your 10" twist barrel at your upper level velocities if you are interested. BTW, where are you located and what is the altitude?
