For those of you who are thinking about a new long range rifle build I just thought I'd drop a few lines here with a bit of info on a great caliber thats got a big following in the BR and F-class game but a few varmint shooters have realy cought on to this fantastic little round.
The 6.5x47 Lapua is a great ltiile round geting very close to the same velocities as the 260 Rem but with less powder maing for a bit longer barrel life. Its only normal for reloaders to not leave well enough alone and start wild catting this round , the easy step of necking it down to 6mm will give you equial to and in some guns better velocities as the 243 Ackley even with the heavier bullets in the 105gr class.

The gun below is a Rem model 7 thats was fully bule printed with an over sized PT&G bolt , single shot follower glued in , the barrel is a 26.5" Bartlein , 5R rifling 1-7.5 twist and chambered specificaly for the 115gr Berger VLD's , the stock is one of Joel Russo's A5L's black & brown , the action is piller bedded and the barrel is free floated.
Anyway , I had built the gun to shoot F-class with but I had to help out with some medical bils for my mother and some toys had to go this being one of them. A great guy bought the gun and has since been shooting it , here is a pic of the gun folowed by an E-mail he sent talking about some shooting hes done , just a little proof that you don't need to spend $4000 on a gun to shoot small stuff at 1000+yds.

HEY JAMES,
I TOOK THE RIFLE ON A HUNTING TRIP, HIT 2 PRARI DOGS AT 1563 YARDS, A FEW AT 1200, AND FEW AT 750 PLUS. ON PAPER IT SHOOTS ONE HOLE AT 300 YARDS. (AT HOME 300 YARDS IS THE FURTHEST I CAN SHOOT) MY LOAD IS 38.5 GRAINS OF H-4831SC TOPPED WITH A 105 A-MAX, WITH THE BULLET 10 THOUSANDS IN THE LANDS. THE BARREL IS BY FAR THE BEST BARREL I HAVE EVER OWNED!! IT PICKS UP NO COPPER, AND CLEANS EXTREMELY EASY. I AM A FANATIC WITH CLEANING AND AFTER I CLEAN I CHECK IT WITH A BORE SCOPE. 10 PATCHES WITH BARNS CR10 AND ITS CLEAN. (I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT THIS IS AFTER 90 ROUNDS NONSTOP WITH NO LOSS OF ACCURACY). ALL IN ALL THIS RIFLE IS AWSOM!! CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH.

I am sold....but then again I have been for a while:) I told you not to sell that thing, that it was going to be a shooter. I understand the reason you had to sell the gun and hated to see that one go.

I've seen what the 6x47L can do in person now at 600 yards. A 2.062" group at 600 yards is fine indeed. Small agg. of 2.98" pretty impressive. A score of 138-4x. To win the LG match.
There were other 6x47's on the line too, still trying to work out the kinks.

I talked to a shooter who was shooting 70 grain bullets at 4000 fps. with good brass life, like 50 fire-ings. Even with an 8" twist throated for 105-108 bullets.

That combination sounds spectacular for varmints.

Not real impressed with the terminal perfomance of 6mm heavies on longrange varmints at this point.

But maybe this is the ticket?

as alot of you guys know i personally have a 6x47l and it was built by 308nate. he also shoots one for f class. we have had 2 matched and between the 2 guns we have won all 6 relays. they have also won both matches. there is no question that this is a great caliber.

Small world. I know Eddie and was on this PD trip with him. Nice rifle.

I have a 6x47 as well. Had a kill past 1000 which I couldn't find and confirmed kills at 920 and 950.

The 105 Amax is pretty devastating closer in as well.

I'm shooting a Predator action with a 7.5 twist Schneider 5P.
38.5 grains of H4350, CCI 450, 105 Amax .020 into the lands.

I have and have had almost all of the 6mm calibers from 6mmBr to 6 Rem Ackley and think that the 6x47 is the best of the bunch.

Is the above mentioned rifle a tight neck chamber or a no-turn neck chamber? I have heard and read the necks on the 6x47 Lapua need to be turned in order to make it shoot really well. Is this true or is it performing well in a no-turn neck type chamber too.

It is a no-turn neck, same reamer that created the chamber on my match rifles. I have not seen a need to turn the necks. I actually cant think of one thing that could be done to improve the accuracy of my 6x47s.

Mine is a no-turn as well. Super easy to load for. I have even shot it in informal 1000 yard benchrest, sporter stock and all.

I built a 6.0x47 Lapua off a L579 receiver with a Shilen select match SS barrel 1:8 twist at 27 inches long. Housed in a Stockey's stock. This rifle likes 109 Bergers with just about any powder shooting well but RL 19 at 39.0 grains gave 0.20 to 0.35 groups.

Not throwing stones at the 6x47L, which IS a fine round! But, I had one built on an AR10 with heavy 26 " barrel. Could not get it to do what I wanted. My bad! Then along comes the 6 Creedmoor and I fell in love with it! Rechambered the AR to it and it shoots great with my reloads. Only problem is the flat at the chamber stops factory pointy bullets and the AR blows primers in Hornady ammo! I don't care, it shoots bug holes with my reloads! I wish I coulda got the 6x47 to work, just didn't happen like I wanted. I now love this AR!

6.5x47 Lapua with 147g eldm (.697 BC) is tough to beat in accuracy and long barrel life. I am using AA4350 with Rem 7 1/2"s. If you are building a long range varmint rifle, you want long barrel life with some wind bucking ability. Barrel life on the combo above is around 2800 rounds perhaps more if you do not over heat the barrel. AA2700 will extend the barrel life even more, I am working on loads for this combo now.

If you can stand the weight, a 30-31" finished barrel in a 5R configuration will get you 2800 fps with the 147's using only a smidgeon of powder. If you were to go 260 AI or 6.5/284, then the barrel life will be 1200 rounds or less, but you could push it further with some flyers from time to time. The 147's do not react well with a rough barrel.

I'm shooting a 6x47L built on a Defiance with Shilen select match. Took to Mexico killed a couple of pigs and a coues deer. Used 95 grain TMK. I'm surprised at the velocity compared to 243
