Savage Assistance Needed

Need to order a savage recoil lug.

I have one barrel and one action from different sources and no recoil lug.

Barrel is a savage 7 REM Mag take off barrel.

Specs say small or large shank. How do I tell which I need given the above information?

well , if you have a small shank then you'll need a small shank lug , but if its a big shankl action and barrel then your gonna need a large shank lug

Realy , the OD on the threads of the barrel should be 1.062"x20TPI for the small shank but generaly for factory barrels they can be as loose as 1.055" OD

while the Large shank Savage barrels threads are 1.120"x20TPI , agaijhne the factroy barrels can vary as much as .005" from barrel to barrel.

If your talking about the action you got from me then you will need a small shank recoil lug ,the ones from Sharp shooters supply are great as they have the screw stud already centered in the lug so it won't spinn when you tighen the barrel.

Small shank barrels are the most common. The large shank come on the target actions, and later RUM, and WSM chamberings. The barrel diameter for a small shank barrel is 1.055. I large shank is around 1.120. If your barrel is a factory take off 7mm remington mag then a standard shank is what you need. $28 for a SS machined lug at Sharpshootersupply.com

Great information.

James, Yep its the one I got from you. Everytime I look at it I get kind of depressed. Looks too good to stick a factory 7 Rem on it and a factory piece of wood. But that's the way things go.

Freebore, its good to know that SharpShooters is a one man operation. That makes me more comfortable. Thanks.

Buyer beware with Sharp Shooters. I hear that the product is good, but I can attest that the customer service is VERY substandard. After I had a terrible experience, I did a little research, and found that there were others that had similar problems.

There were others, but this one is pretty representative.

If these are the parts I sent you, I'd be interested in how the gun turns out. I don't know if an old barrel on a new action changes how it shoots, but it did like RL22.

When I built my Savage .308 I talked to Kevin Rayhill at Stockade gun stocks. He had everything. Recoil lug, tactical bolt handle, bolt head, magazine box, everything. Best of all I had it in four days. He said If I ever needed anything call. Even on Sunday afternoon he said. Beware though, He will talk your ear off so have fifteen-twenty minutes if you call.

I've had a half-hour call with Kevin too! Nice guy, and great products.

I've also heard that Sharp Shooter Supply has been going through some growing pains. It was only Fred and Lisa handling all the bussiness. Now they've hired some competent help. So, they should be catching up with the backlog as well as focusing on some customer service shortfalls.

Kevin is a great guy. I look at Savage Shooters forum alot and a bunch of people are talking about Sharp Shooter Supply and their backlog. Quite a few guys are getting the run around about delivery times on stocks especially. Not real happy campers. I tried to get ahold of them several times about my Savage project and could never get anyone on the phone.

Kevin Rayhill is the best choice. He's into the Savage's and everything else as well as long range shooting. I know who I'll call on my next Savage project.
