Rifle hunt?

I would like to plan a speed goat hunt out west for a rifle hunt. Can anyone tell me what states have over the counter tags or do i need to do the lottery?

You have to apply. Good news is Wyoming always have some left over tags come July and you can still get a tag this year. They will be in units with lots of private land, so you may have to pay a trespass fee or really study your maps and try to find some public land to hunt. Usually there are small parcels of public in most units that a guy can hunt if he is careful. Trespass fees are usually very reasonable in alot of areas, especially if you go after the first week of season.

You can still apply for Montana for the next day or so, June 2 is the deadline. Apply for unit 700-00 and you can hunt the eastern side of the state and should be a sure draw, usually 100%. Lots of public and block managment land to hunt. Unit 620-00 is another option and you should draw it as well.

Those are the best chances for this year. I have other info on other states if you are interested.

Not that I'm trying to keep you out of Montana, but Wyoming has bigger bucks on average than Montana. But Montana might offer better access through public lands and block management.

Colorado has leftover licenses available on the CDoW website, updated every hour or so to be the latest info.

However, hunting on the plains here is almost ALWAYS on private land, and licenses go by WMA areas overlaid on the land. The website has a handy map of all the WMA's, but it'll be labor intensive to track down individual landowners to get hunting pemission.

Colorado has a useful Big Game Walk In program that costs hunters $40 and allows you to hunt, without having to seek permission, on private ranch land. So co-ordinate the leftover tag you want, by WMA with where the Big Game Walk In program has a holding- and you are hunting.

Is this in cooperation with the landowners or is it forced on them?

Montana has a similar program (Block Management) with farmers and ranchers here that is a cooperative effort. Walking or driving is up to the landowner and written permission needs to be obtained usually the day/morning of the hunt.

N, S, E, or W?

I'm 30 miles SSW of South Bend. I'll be in Wy. this year for Mulies and pronghorns. Sept. 15th is the opener for Mulies in the area that we have tags for. We're hoping to be done with the Mule Deer hunting by Thursday/Friday and spend the next couple of days looking for good goats.
