last november, i decided i wanted a truly longrange rifle. so i decided on building a 338 edge. i decided on the savage action because i would be able to do all the work. after calling around, i found that shilen makes pre-chambered/threaded savage barrels and they would chamber one in 338 edge.

so, i started looking for a savage 110, heck since i'll be building one, i might as well get another rifle for a different caliber build. so, i got 2 savage 110's at approx $250 each. now for the stock. i've had good luck with stockade stocks and they are aluminum framed with aluminum pillar bedding, so i ordered a prairie dog/tactical out-of-mold stock for $200. my other build was going to be a 6.5-284, the stock ordered was and a el-cheapo duramaxx. the 28" 338 edge varmint contour and the 26" 6.5-284 varmint contour was ordered from accuracy arms last december. the barrels just arrived so i commenced to do the fun part..the build..

here they are prior to painting. the amenities: 338 edge - rifle basix trigger, savage over-sized bolt, farrell 20 MOA base, leupold steel rings, SSS 1/4" recoil lug, leupold vari-x III 6.5-20 with M1 target turrets; the 6.5-284 - SSS competition trigger, savage over-sized bolt, farrell stand base, leupold steel rings, SSS 1/4" recold lug..scope..undecided. since i built these for economy, i may get a super sniper X.

Dang fine looking gun's! Are the stockade stocks drop in, or do the barrel channels need to be opened up? Any other tweaking need to be done?

the out of mould stocks need some finishing work: epoxy to some areas and very light sanding. the barrel channels fit factory barrels. maybe relieving some material to float the tang then a nice glass bed.

i like your style, especially when it's my only option! you mentioned a chambered/threaded barrel from Shilen. can i ask how much that ran?

the handle on the tactical stock seems to be below the rear line of the butt stock. i think i'd have to shorten that up a little...not a big deal.

all in all a great looking project for a great price. i have an Edge and i love it.

the barrel was $289 for a select match barrel.

good work my man!

DIYr's are top cabin around here!

RE the economical scope. If you are going to do LRH with even a chance of poor light or even watching the shady side of a mounting I'd recommend going no more than 10X on the SS scope. The 16X I had performed very poorly under those conditions. Then 10X on my son's rig is much better and is also enough power for LRH.
