Best Remington Platform to Start With

So I've decided the barrel is all but shot out of my most used and loved rifle. Sadly, the safety is also messed up and I don't know if it's worth going through the trouble to save it knowing that it also needs to be rebarrelled and it's not really the right gun for me. I would most prefer a custom but it's not the highest thing on my list. If I intend to have a new gun rebarrelled and rechambered at a later date, add new stock, and basically exchange everything but the action, what is the best remington to get?

If I go with the model 700XCR Tactical in .300 winmag will changing to .300 EDGE be a problem? I don't know enough about all this kind of stuff. Would I be better with Sendero in .300 RemUltra as a base for future plans? Is this a bad idea alltogether? I want to get a capable rifle now, shoot 1000 or so rounds out of it and then send it to somebody to make it what I really want. Which remington is going to be the most accurate of the two mentioned above? Is there another rifle I should be considering for this. I really like Remington action so I probably want to stay with them.

Both would be great but for me it would be the sendero in 300 ultra.

if you need the power, I would go with the ultra, if you dont need alot of power I would go with a cooper in a 6.5x284. Mine shoots great but it is not as cheap as the remington. so is the power required? If your going to be using on elk then go with the ultra.

I would go with the 300 RUM Sendero if you want to use it for a 338 EDGE platform later. A barrel change and Head spacing and your there. Save all your 300 RUM brass to reload for your 338 EDGE. The 300 Win Mag will have to have the feed rails opened up a bit to properly feed the 338 EDGE plus you couldnt use this brass for your future swap to the 338 EDGE.

I have been reading about a guy named Jim Murphy who is a very accomplished F-class shooter, he is using a 7mm RSAUM AI with great success. It has the 40deg Ackley shoulders .
The reason it has peaked my interested is that I am left handed and have a Model 700LH Varmint Special Synthetic sitting in my vault. it is chambered in 223.
I am thinking about sending it out for a rebarrel & blue print job. Might as well have the bolt opened up to for the 7mm RSAUM, Sako Extractor, and etc.
I am looking at a flutted 30" bbl match grade bbl.
I thinking that it will be more than sufficent for mule deer hunting in the wide open spaces.
Oh how I wish Remington would do a run of left handed Model 700 Sendero's in a long action.

troutslayer- i caught a bunch of apache trout here on wednesday. like the sendero's because the fluting keeps them with in a reasonble weight for hunting. i shoot a 7mm and 300 win . my brother shoots a 264 and a 300 rum. i bet the xcr tactical is good too. you have to decide the caliber all the senderos we have were worth it. they should make a left hand and a 6.5 -284 or 6.5-06. roninflag

I know of two friends who have Sendero's in 300 RUM, one gets ocasional 1/2 or 5/8 groups and the other shot out his, after 2500 rounds over 6" of rifling was gone! I Put a Rock 26" fluted sendero contour & a Vais brake on for him and he has shot 5 different loads in the .2 & .3"s. Says that it doesn't give him a headache now w/the brake. Get a Sendero, it's a great platform!

Ron, I am a yearly visitor to your state. I have always wanted to catch an Apache trout and the next time I head down there I'm going to make a trip to the White Mountains to do just that. Maybe I will IM you for information. I bet I will be there in November or so of this year but haven't made any plans yet.


Thanks for the advice guys. I guess Sendero it is, going to go brand new Sendero SF II in .300 REM unless there is some reason I should be looking for an older model because it is better somehow? What's the cheapest I should expect to get this gun brand new?

I paid just over $900 for my 300 RUM Sendero SF II about a year ago. Go with the 300 RUM SF II and don't look backgun)

I have been in the same spot and I put a new barrel on my gun. After pricing many different barrels I just put a douglas on it and it shoots fine. As for the XCR or Sendero. I have both it boils down to which one you will love to carry. <<<That Sendero is a big girl. I like having Remingtons built . Seems as if they are the chevy V8 or rifles meaning it does not take much money to make them very good guns. Good luck. PS I am jealous of your location. Montana is where I want to live when I grow up. Until then I will be in Mississippi
