Objective size

For long range hunting what do you guys recommend? A 40 or 50mm objective scope? I wont be doing alot of spot lighting, just some?

But what do most guys have on long range rifles? 40mm for quicker target spotting or what ever?

BTW: Rifle is a .300wsm used for chasing pigs up to 800 yards away

I'm using a Weaver 6-20 X 40 on my 300WSM . Have no probelms targeting ground hogs at 800 ... hitting them is a different story.

Demo, I use a Nightforce NXS 8x32x56mm on my 300WSM. If your going to get a NXS scope, go with the 56mm objective.

Why not the 50mm from your experience, clarity, low light ?

I own 4 of the NXS scopes and they all wear the 50mm objective. My friend has the 56mm Nightforce in the bench rest model and I see no reason to go to the 56mm objective instead of the 50mm for a hunting scope IMHO the 50mm is ideal...

Kind of my thought as well..... I just bought a 5.5-22 x 50 NPR1, but curious why some are going with the 56mm

I went with the 56 because:
1. 25% more light coming in
2. a little more eye relief
3. Same price

Yes it sits 3mm higher but that's less than 1/8 of an inch. That 25% more light could make a difference during the 1/2 hour before and 1/2 hour after sunset. Since the extra 25% more light is free... why not?

I shoot all 50mm objectives. On days that are cloudy and the light isn't all that good I need all the light transmission I can get. I had a Leupold 6-18 x 40 once, it was nice for hunting hogs in the summer out to about 750 yard but even when a cloud came over I couldn't see a hog at 500 yards in a fence row very well. I could see him fine in my glasses, so I switched guns to a 50mm objective and could see him clear as a bell. The bigger the objective of course the more light transmission but also the scope has to sit up higher. Everything has it's pros and cons.

Demo, JWP475 is right the 56mm is probably too much objective for hunting. I would say the 50mm would be perfect too. The hunting I will be doing with my 300 WSM is squirrel, Pdogs and Coyotes. It is set up around a slow twist barrel and designed for shooting the lighter .30cal varmint bullets out to 600 yards. I like the 56mm because it pulls in a little more light in the morning and evening hours.

After mounting an ST10S on my Sendero I found that bigger isnt always better,the quality of the glass plays just as much of a roll in light transmission if not more than objective size.I can take the ST10S (37MM objective) and my leupold 6.5X20X50 LRT out as its getting dark and set the Leupy to 10X,but the clarity and light transmission is much better with the ST10S even if I turn the Leupy down to 6X.In the case of the NF objectives,it would be interesting to have one of each side by side at dusk,set at the same power level and actually observe the difference.

My cousin has a 56mm Nightforce bench rest model that I sold him and unless you are hunting at NIGHT I don't see the need for the bigger objective. You're correct the NXS 50mm blows the Leupy 50mm objective scopes away in very low light to mu eyes at least...
