Hey Guys I am a long time reader here and I finally wanted to ask a question. Has anyone here shot the Savage Model 12 300WSM in either I believe the BVSS or the Low Profile both Model 12's. I am looking to get a heavy barreled 300WSM and like the prices they are offered. Any help would do. Thanks Guys

I have a 112 in 300winmag. But mine was a FLVSS with the crappy stock. It's now wearing a Stockade Tactical. I shoot around .5 MOA very consistently. I also just made a model 12 in 220 Swift. It started life as a long action 308win. I screwed on the heavy Swift barrel last week. It shoots .3-.4 with factory ammo.

So what I'm saying is that the model 12 barrels shoot good no matter what action is behind them.

Both of those stocks are very good, but not available to me. I'm a lefty. But I've heard that they are great.

Thanks

Thanks, I thought it would be a good shooter, I had one in .223 that would shoot bug holes with factory 55 gr winchester ballistic silvertips. Just was wondering either to go with the more expensive low profile laminate gun or cheaper plastic stocked one and upgrade later. Thanks for the reply..

I have a 12fvss in 300wsm that I replaced the plastic stock with a laminated low profile stock from savage. It have a burris signature 4x16 on it with talley rings and bases. It will shoot sub MOA loaded with 69.5 gr of ramshot hunter and 165 accubonds. Also has the accu-trigger which I like. Thinking seriously about putting it up for sale because I'm really a 7mm fan.

Why don't you keep the rifle but swap the barrels. Put a 7wsm or 7/300wsm barrel on it?

Send the 300wsm barrel to me. I'll scrub the large shank off and put it on my 112FLVSS.:D

That has crossed my mind for sure. I'd thought about sending it to sharpshooter supply and letting them put 7mm wsm barrel on it.

I was thinking the same thing, but I did my first barrel swap a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how easy it was. First time took me about 1/2 hour. Now I can swap back and forth in minutes.

Fred at SSS if very good. If you want him to do your swap you should get on the list and have him true and time it at the same time. But be prepared to wait a while. I hear the list is several months long. I guess that is the sign of a good smith that doesn't rape his customers. I've also heard good thing about the Douglas barrels that he uses.

You may also check out Kevin Rayhill @ Stockade Gun Stocks. He also specializes in Savage gunsmithing and is well recommended.

I was thinking instead of the factory gun, just replacing my barrel on an older 110 .270 and turning it into a 6.5*284 from SSS. I looked up the barrel from them and doesn't sound too pricey. A lot cheaper than buying a new gun. I already have a Model 70 300WSM that I hunt w/ now. I just was looking a the heavier barreled Savage ones. What would you guys suggest, Swapping the barrel on my older 110 or just buying the new Savage w/ the same caliber that I have. If so is it very hard to to the swap myself?

Hard to offer a suggestion, but let's look at the pro's/con's. If you use your 270 you'll have to swap the barrrel back and forth. Not a big deal, just takes some time. If you buy another action, you're spending money that could have been spent on more barrels.

Either way It looks like you are thinking about swapping the barrels yourself. It is very easy. Can you change the oil or brake pads on your car/truck. If yes, you easily have the aptitude to swap a barrel. Get the wheeler action wrench, or make your own. Forget the barrel wrenches, they don't work as well as the action wrench. You'll also need a nut wrench. The Wheeler one works but the SSS one is better. Put the action in the wrench, put the nut wrench on the nut and give it a whack with a hammer. Don't use a cheater, or try to muscle it, it will just spin. The whack with a hammer has a better jolt force to break the nut free. Sometimes it'll take a couple whacks but it will come loose.

Then all you got to do is put in a go gauge and thread your barrel on, don't forget the nut. Snug the barrel down on the gauge. Then snug the nut down. You only want hand tight, no more. I just lean on it a bit and call it good. Now it's best if you use a no-go gauge and make sure the bolt will not close, or you can apply a couple layers of the clear masking tape on the bottom of the go gauge and also check that the bolt will not close. You may need to make a couple adjustments with the barrel/nut. After that you are good to go send some down the range.

In the length of time I took to type this, I could have changed my 220 swift to 308 and back.:)

If you are going to swap yourself. Check out the Shilen barrels and Mcgowen barrels. They are as good as the Douglas that Fred sells but are about $40 cheaper. Jim Briggs with Northland Shooter Supply will sell you an extra Savage or Stevens action as well as a Shilen or McGowen barrel.

Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions.
