448 yard buck

Guys this buck was taken by me this season the day after Thanksgiving. I was coyote hunting with my cousin and when we came up to a big draw, he was grazing on the other side with a group of doe.

I lazed him at 448 and dialed up my scope for a 450 yard shot. The problem was, the grass in front of me was about 2 feet tall so a prone shot was out of the question. So I sat against a small tree and set the rifle on my knee. I was able to hold about a 3-4 inch circle on him so I knew that would be more than adequite. I am a fan of the neck shot just because of years of hunting and guiding on my high game fence. It puts them down and you dont have to worry about tracking.

So, I was set up and had a pretty good rest. With my cousin spotting for me I told him I was going to break the shot.

Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, half exhale,
BOOOOM, Whap!

It was all over but the kicking!

He scored 164 gross even with his broken tines. He weighed just over 230 which is massive for deer in our area near Weatherford. They usually weigh about half of that.

And the weapon....(It likes to stay in shape!)

thats a great buck you texas boys are lucky, here in Iowa rifles are a no no except during a certain doe only season, congrats on the hunt

Nice buck. Shoot them in the shoulder with that 257 they will DRIT. I shoot a 25-06 myself for deer. Shoulder shots DRIT 99.9% of the time. There is just something about any 25 cal from 250 Savage up and DRIT shots on deer.

My fam owns a high game deer ranch and I have seen hundreds of deer killed out there. All the deer I cull off of it are either shot in the head (doe) or shot in the C3-C5 vertibrae. This obviously is a DRT shot. Of all the hunters that pay, the high shoulder shot is what I like them to make because it flat puts them down(if they are not comfortable with a neck shot). I have seen anywhere from 223 up to 300 Weatherby's on a high shoulder shot and have NEVER seen a deer take a step after being hit there. I know people will argue that it ruins meat. Lets talk about that for a second. If someone is paying 10,000 plus for a hunt, its not the meat they are after. Its the rack. If they get ****y about loosing 4 ounces of meat then I will give them a doe for free! Now if its a deer they are not getting mounted, then I will encourage a neck shot and no meat is lost at all.

Now this is all my opinion and by no means am I saying
that it is the way it has to be done. This is just what I have seen and believe it to be true.
