How far off the lands with Amaxes?

I'm using the 6mm AI with 105 grain Amaxes and not getting good groups at 100 yards. 1-1.5" at 100 yards, although at further ranges the bullet seems to shoot better.

all the guns i shoot seem to like the bullets just up to the lands and a few like them jamed up intheir. but you better make sure that theuir are strait.

I much prefer to goupe test guns at 300yds than 100yds , I've had a couple that shot just as good at 300m as they did at 100yds , especialy with the long VLD bullets

Where they shoot best is how far off. I don't usually play with that. If they wont shoot in the lands, it's hard to imagine they'll shoot off the lands. But some like to tinker with that, and some have success. Could be you need to try a different powder, or that it could be your gun just doesn't like those bullets. However, if you can get 1-1.5" out of them, so long as those are groups, and not 2 touching and one flyer, I generally believe you can tighten that up some way or another. My first thought would be "in the lands" not "how far off".

how far out would you consider a flyer (not to hijack) but im shooting the 105's as well out of my 243 and I ca usually have 2 touch , the the 3rd is .25 to .5 away my groups have been right around .5 CtoC but i see alot of pic on here with 3 or 5 touching

What's your barrel twist? The older 6mm's had a 1 in 12 which would be too slow for the 105's - you need at least a 1 in ten to get them stabilized. What is the rifle shooting well right now?

I shoot the 105's jammed into the lands and they shoot very well for me. Like others have said, sometimes bullets quiet down in flight and you'll see better grouping at longer distances (better meaning they don't open up anymore than what you see at 100 yards).

Lastly, I tried some Nosler 95gr. BT's recently - because I can't find 105's Amax's and although the BC is not great, they are lasers out to 600 yards. The Noslers have a flatter base which can help stabilize bullets at shorter distances.

It is a 1-10" twist. These are the first bullets I have tried out of this barrel. When I say I get a flyer way out, I mean 3+ inches. I had 2 in the same hole last weekend and the next one barely made the paper.

I'm shooting them .005 off the lands, I'll try some right on, and if there are no pressure signs, bump up the speed a bit.

What about bullets that won't let you seat into the lands because they won't cycle in your magazine. I have been trying some Scirocco II in my 300 saum and I cannot seat them into the lands or even very close for that matter because if I seat them even close to the lands they are too long in my magazine, I would have to shoot them as a single shot.

I do shoot mine as a single shot, as I can't get the cases to feed or eject worth crap. It's on a long action too, so magazine length wouldn't be an issue anyways.

I wouln'd call .5" a flyer. As long as you can get what can be identified as "a group"...you can usually work with it. If the gun is just randomly spraying rounds or routinely shooting 2 touching and one 2" away...those problems are harder to diagnose in my experience.

If it's just spraying rounds, likely it doesn't like the bullet powder combo. The "flyers" can mean almost anything!

3" flyers? I'd check my scope mounts and bedding screws. That's often an indication something's wrong with the gun, not the load.

If you don't want a single shot, and I don't recommend that, then you just load to SAAMI OAL or as long as the mag will allow and call it good. Some guns just wont allow playing with seating due to the mag legnth.
