alright guys i shoot a 7mm wsm for my heavy rifle. If i am going to take a long shot i would take this rifle. i am wondering about a light rifle. thats were the 6.5x284. i want to know what kind of speed you guys are actually getting out of them with a 140 grain bullet. i would also like to see i you guys would go with the 6.5x284 win or the 6.5x284 lapua. i know that the lapua will have better brass. this is going to be the gun that i take to staulk a deer or elk i want it to be a 9lb with scope. this also means that i might loose the brass when hunting. eather way a huge buck is worth the price of brass.

What ranges are you considering for your 9lb rig?
Deer/antelope class animals only?

i wont shoot this gun past 500. i have heavy long range guns for that. this is only going to be a gun that i use to staulk up close. i always carry 2 rifles in the truck. i hunt an area of bout 4o square miles so i do alot of spot and staulk. if i cant get closser then i will pull out my heavier rig.

I have one in 6/284 and they are fun to shoot. I am going to use the 90gr Scirroco this year vice the Nosler Ballistic Tip. I had velocities at the 3700 fps level and it was very accurate. Longest kill is exactly 600 on a small deer.

I just built a 6.5-284 and am working on breaking the barrel in. I'll let you know in the next month or so what a 140gr berger VLD will do with RL22 and maybe 4350.

those are the 2 powders that i was wondering about. i think that this is going to be a great caliber for what i want to do. i am trying to find a barrel in #4 conture. then i want a mcmillan htg and kwik klip bottom metal. and i will top it with a ior. if anyone has any of these componants let me know...

In my 6.5-284 I run the 140 class bullets between 2920 and 2980 with Re 22 out of a 26" barrel.(SMK, Amax, and SST) Loaded some SSTs with H1000 and they ran at 2940.

i am asuming that you guys have the 6.5x284 winchester. does anyone know if i go with the lapua i will gain anything besides the better brass. i am pretty sure they are different reamers...

I use "L" brass in my three and I use H-4350 in all of them.
MV's (specialty pistols mind you) run from 2700-2775 with 140 class bullets.

2950 FPS with R-22 and a 142SMK over lapua Brass. H-4831 gave the same speeds. For a 500 yard hunting rifle I would go with Lapua Brass and a .298 no neck turn. Load it and go hunting.

I think you may be confused, there is the 6.5-284 winchester and 6.5-284 Norma, Lapua makes 6.5-284 brass as well as Nosler and Hornady. I personally use necked down Winchester brass. As far as the difference between Norma and Winchester dimensions, there really isn't much difference. I think the Norma has the shoulder moved forward like .001" or something.

i ordered my new barrel today. i talked to nate about the reamer that he is using and i told me that it is set up for the 6.5x284 lapua brass.i can use the other ones but they will need to be fire formed. thats what i got from him. eather way i will be using lapua brass.

I had 308 Nate build my daughter a 6.5-284 Lapua for her 14th birthday. Used Rem 700 S/S ation and a 30" Lilija barrel on a HS Stock. He even engraved her name and birth date on the barrel. It is a tack driver and Nathan does great work. James Jones did the stock work for me. I started with the 130gr. Nosler Accubonds but only purchased one box for load development and couldn't buy any more last year. I swithced to the 142 SMK and H-1000 powder @ 2900 fps.
This rifle saw its first hunting season and accounted for 4 bang flops this past season. The Accubonds worked well as did the MatchKings. We shot out to 500 yds and it shot sub-moa. You won't go wrong with 308 Nate he will treat you riight. Deal in confidence.
