This is my first post so please bear with me. I am having a 22-284 built on a remngton action and want to get the jump on reloading. Can anyone help wth any data for this caliber? I already know that this cartidge is over bore and a real barrel burner, with that said I have a specific use for this rifle and am planning on shooting it about 150 times a year. I plan on shooting a v-max or a-max 75 grain at distances out to 700 yds. So if you have any insight please feel free to help me out. Thanks John

Here some load info;

1. 51grns of H4350-Work your way up to 53grns.
2. Federal 210 Primer
3. Lapua Brass

You could also try the following powders;
1. VV-N165
2. IMR 4831
3. H4831

Begining load with the above mentioned powders will be 51grns and work up to 53grns.

The 284 case is capable of pushing a 75grn bullet at over 4000+fps. I don't think the 75grn A-Max can be pushed that fast. I only think the 75grn A-Max can handle up to 3200fps, any faster than that, and I think it will come apart. I might be wrong, however, I know A-Max bullets are not designed for high velocity shooting. They work best at around 3000fps.

I know Hornady makes a .22cal 60grn V-Max and Nosler makes a 60grn Ballistic Tip. The 22-284, with a 30" barrel will push those bullets at 4300 to 4400fps. Sierra makes .22 cal 69grn, 77grn, 80grn and 90grn MatchKings. The MK's will handle the high velocities of the 22-284.

Anyhow, I hope this helps. Have fun with your rifle, I bet that baby is going to provide you with some awesome RED MIST shots. I look forward to hearing about your build in the future.

Wow, not to be rude but perhaps this is one of those time where if you really don't know, you should probably not try to help!

If you put 53 grains of 4350 behind a 75 grain bullet in a .22-284, you would be wearing your bolt as piece of jewelry. And the 75 grain bullet will never ever even come close to going 4000 fps in any length barrel. And the 75 grain amax will handle 3300 fps just fine. THe other bullets listed WILL NOT give red mist. THey poke holes and thats about it.


OK, here's some load data from the 22-284 that I owned many years ago.
30" shilen select match 6 groove barrel:
6.5-284 norma brass necked down
75 grain amax jammed .005" into the riflings
50-53 grains of RL25 = from 3350 to 3500 with fed 210 primers
54 grains of N170=3300 fps

60 grain partitions w/ 55 grains of h4831= 3750 fps


I used this gun for about 2 years and fired about 750 rounds through it before it started blowing up amax bullets due to very rough throat. Then I switched over to 80 grain Sierra smk's and they shot well but just poked holes in every rockchuck I shot with them. Some chucks even walked away with a perfect center hit. The smk's shot well for about another 200 rounds and then it started blowing them up too.

I had the barrel borescoped and the first three inches of the barrel were abslolutely scary looking. I cut those three inches off, rechambered to a 22-250 AI and the barrel went another 600 rounds before I had to fire a Tubbs kit through it. Then it shot fine and I still have it to this day. I am approaching 2500 rounds total through the barrel. But the 22-284 was fun. I dusted quite a few chucks and prairie dogs over 1000 yards with it. Even cranked one at 1190 once.

In my opinion, the 22-250 AI is a far superior cartridge to the 22-284. It gets within 150 fps and with a 3" shorter barrel while using 12 grains less powder. I will never have another 22-284 and probably will never have a 284 based case that is necked down any further than .264". It is simply too big of a case for small calibers to get any real gain in return.

If you only want 700 yard performance, I would even go a step further and just shoot a 6x47 lapua or a 6-250 AI with 87 grain vmax bullet. They would be very flat to 700 yards and they would blow things up well. Or put an 8" twist in it and shoot 95 grain VLD's to double that distance very easily.

In 1972 I built a 22/284 on a Sako L579 Action, Ackley 33 inch 1 in 12 twist barrel, and unfortunately at that time I was unable to get access to the heavier bullets and slower powders that I wanted.

However, my chrono data below with the 60 grain Hornady HP, supports Good Groupers assertion that using 51 - 53 grains of H4350 with the 75 Amax would be a monumental overload.
60 grain Hornady Hp
46.0 grains - IMR 4350 - 3821 fps
47.0 grains - IMR 4350 - 3855 fps (Max)

52.0 grains - H4831 - 3722 fps
53.0 grains - H4831 - 3798 fps
54.0 grains - H4831 - 3878 fps (Max)

I have found that my lot of H4350 is usually about 0.5 to 1.0 grain slower burning than IMR4350. Regards, Brian.

To take advantage of the 284's huge case capacity I'd be looking to work with 80-90gr bullets.

Accuracy life of the 22-243, 22-6mm and similar cartridges is usually around 1,000 rnds. Shoot accordingly with your new project rifle.

I'm sure the 22-284 will be a hoot to shoot. Good luck
 
I would agree, you have plenty of twist and velocity to shoot the heaviest commerical bullets out there. Many of the thin jacketed bullets like the A-Max and Berger will have a velocity ceiling of around 3250 fps. This is not a given but very common, especially with a 1-8 twist barrel.

You may want to try the 80 and 90 gr SMK.

Another idea that may be worth trying is to get some of the 100 gr ULD RBBTs to try. I tested these in a 1-7 Lilja. They were limited to 3100 fps in that barrel but it was a three groove. In a 1-8 6 groove, you may be able to get a bit more velocity. 3200-3250 fps with a 100 gr ULD RBBT would be a very good thing in a 22-284 compared to a 75 gr A-Max at the same velocity if thats all that barrel will allow this bullet to be driven to.

I can not say 100% that the 1-8 will stabilize it but it would be worth a shot to see. The 90 gr SMK should definately work well.

It here finally. I started wish 52 grn of h870 now i'm at 56 grains of h-870 with a 75 grain a-max. Groups are around .75 but I think mypressures are getting close to maximum. I want to try a couple different bullets and see were we go from here. i also tried 53.5 grains of imr 4350 with the same bullet didnt group worth a poop. Wondering if it wasn't pushing fast enough to stabilize the bullet need to work on this load. Want to try some vvn550 going to start with 39 grains and work up. Keep you posted. John
