Do McMillian stocks come with an aluminium bedding block similar to a Bell & Carlson? I have looked on their website and do not see any mention of a bedding block. If they do not come with a bedding block are they as strong as a Bell & Carlson. I have been a fan of the Bell & Carlson medalist, but do not like what they offer for the Browning A-Bolt.

I think if you specify them at the point of order they will fit them not sure if it costs tho' I am told its free but its worth asking the question.

HS Precision places the aluminum bedding blocks into their stocks but McMillans are fabricated in an entirely different process and there are no bedding blocks. The McMillan heavier stocks utilize aluminum or steel pillars, round pieces of tubing that help ensure the stock does not crush when you torque the stock bolts and essentially give the barreled action something to sit on, besides the bedding that should be used. In fact most McMillans are bedded with a special compound that makes for a perfect fit of the receiver into the action area of the stock and the pillars are glued in place at each stock bolt hole. They must be of proper length to support but not too long or the action will not seat properly.

The aluminum bedding blocks work but they work best when a slight amount of bedding compound is placed in the receiver area to make a perfect fit of the action into the action area of the stock. This is called skim bedding and it is highly recommended by HS. I believe HS originated the idea of the aluminum bedding block, theirs goes inside the pistol grip and extends to about where the barrel screws into the receiver. One long piece of CNC'd aluminum.

McMillan has the best stock bedding specialist in the industry on staff and he does incredible "full action to the end of the barrel channel" bedding. His work is amazing, not cheap but worth every penny.

Will McMillan do two tone paint jobs, not camo, but spiderweb or flake? If so does any one have pictures?

May I ask you ardvice please?

I just bought a McMillan A5 for my Sako 75.

Question, does it have these pillars already moulded in the stock?

The reason I ask is a guy has offered to bed it for me and wants to put in aluminium blocks in but if it already has the pillars then it don't need them right?

Many thanks

HP

I think McMillan will essentially make it any way you want if you don't mind the wait.

I got my A-5 used, inlet for my action but for RH. I'm a lefty, I hogged out a bolt slot on the left side and filed down for the bolt release, then filled the old cut-outs with marine-tex; sanded down the channel and bolted my free-floating barreled action into place. Dropped right in and fit like a glove. Once the scope comes in I'll be duracoating the whole thing, I expect the stock will take the paint quite well.

On a basic order they don't come with them unless asked for. I order mine with 1/2" guard screw holes and my smith installs them. You will be able to see them if they are there.

HeskethPritchard,
As shipped the McMillan stocks do not have pillars installed. If they have been installed you would see an aluminum or steel circle at the outside or inside view of each stock bolt hole. They are usually custom fitted and glued in place by a smith when the stock is bedded. McMillan does not place a full length aluminum bedding block into their stocks, not feasable with their production process from the info I got from a guy who spent a lot of time in their factory.
Pillar bedding might seem reduntant if the receiver is full-bedded but it is a standard in the bedding done by most tactical and long range rifle builders.
Good luck with your build, the A5 is a great long range stock.

There is a guy on Predator Masters forum from Omaha,NE that does the spider web paint (in a bunch of colors) on stocks for a very reasonable price (<$100).

could you give me a link or something to search for on the predator masters website? I could not find anything on the site. thanks
