I'm planning on having a gunsmith build me a 6.5 upper for my AR-15
does anyone have any does or don't
The one I have now is a 223 cal and it really shoots nice

objective??

It would help if you give background on what you want to accomplish. The Gendel is a good 6.5 round but not for shooting elk at 1K. What AR platform..... flattop? long heavy barrel? More info always gets more response.

for longer range I think that the 6mm would be a better bet as the little 223 case realy doesn't have the capacity to run the 140 class bullet out to fast especialy out of a gas gun. But if your shooting the lighter 100gr bullets then it would probably work very well.

I have two AR that are 6-223 one is a 14" and the other is a 20" and both shoot very well , I'm actluat probably gonna cut the 14" barrel back to 12" and make a good suppressor for it and have it as a CQB rifle , i can get more speed from a 55gr Ballistic tip in 12" barrel from a 6-223 than a 223 can get for a 20"

What about Mule Deer? Supposedly, it stays supersonic out to about 1400 yards, I would expect that to do pretty well on medium sized game. If I'm wrong, please enlighten.

my 223 is a rock River that has a 24" Wilson barrel, 2 stage trigor and i got an IOR 4-14-50 scope on it. my pet load is 24.4gr of h335 shooting 60gr seirra varmit. it will shoot 1/2 moa out to 3oo yards with very little problems.

That is my intent is to go with the 6.5 grendel with a medium weight barrel 24" in lenght. just for deer and coyotes or other varmits. maybe play with paper targets out to about 1,000 yards. but i don't hear a lot about this caliber on this site?

i am thinking about going to an 338 edge for elk or bigger game. I talked to shawn Carlock. but their is so many options and i am so new to this. it makes my head spin.

Pressman,

DPMS has two 6.5mm possibilities as well... the 260 rem and the new 6.5 Creedmoor in their Panther model.

I am building up the 6.5mm Grendal rifle as well. I like the AR-15 platform mostly because I am not a gunsmith. I am surprised I have not heard more about this rifle on this forum. It seems that if the military is considering the Grendal as a light weight rifle that can have the knock down power with the capablity to shoot the same distance of a .308.

I'd didn't vote on te consensus of "is the ar15 a good idea for what?"
For hunting at range, and cartridge that small might be risky past 500 yards. I'm aware of the grendals stated stellar performance, but it isn't going to out perform terminal performance of a 6.5 creed, and I would be hesitant at 1000y to hit a mule with that with energy being around the 600 ke mark, the teetering point of enough KE to produce good hydrostatic shock.

If the upper is going on your current lower, it will have to be a Grendel. I would trust it on elk out to 500 or so, with the correct bullet. Not past that though. I own four Grendel's, 2ar-15, and two bolts. It's a great little round. If you are wanting to shoot game past the stated distance, IMO, you will need to step up to the ar-10 frame and go with a 260 or a creed.

In the AR 15 platform, about the best most powerful cartridge you can use is the 6.8 SPC or the 6.5 Grendel. Both have almost double the energy of a 223.

I chose the 6.8 because of the slight increase in energy for hunting, brass availability and mag interchangeability. When I finish testing different bullets in the 6.8 I will post the results. the rifle has already shot 1/4 MOA with 110 grain bullets at well over 2700 ft/sec and testing is just getting started.

The larger 6.5s require a AR 10 lower (Like the 260 rem and the Creedmoore.

Ether choice is a good one and you will be happy with the performance

J E,
What kind of range do you think the 6.8 spec is good for on medium size game?
