Opinions on the 338-378 weatherby.

First off I'd like to say hello to everyone been reading for a month or two finally joined. The forum has been quite informative And I look forward to any opinions I may get.

Okay, the question is, " Is there any reason not to choose a 338-378 weatherby as opposed to the 338-300 rum (edge) or The Lapua ?"
I love the lapua but not really entertaining it as it is rather pricey and the edge just seems so much better. Thanks again.- Ripx

I can't recommend a Weatherby 338-378 after the *** I owned, others may have a different story. Take the edge and don't look back is my advice.

I owned and shot the 338-378 WBY for a few years and it was a good rifle. However, I could never get it to shoot under and inch. It just may have been me, but who knows. I did shoot an oryx and a few deer with it and it knocked them flat! Great long range gun though!

Ripper, Welcome. I've been shooting a .338 x .378 that I started building 4 years ago. I keep changing things; stock, scopes, mounts/rings, muzzle brakes, loads, etc. I recently decided to shoot only 300gr Smkhp's and am concentrating on loads for that bullet.

The cartridge has what I believe is a well deserved reputation for being difficult and expensive to dial in. So far my best load with the 300gr is 3/4 moa (repeatable) at 2760 fps out of a 27 1/4" barrel. I am confident that it can shoot 1/2 moa when I find the right combination. As it is, this load can deliver nearly 1000 ft/lbs of energy at 1 land mile, and I think that I can load it up to 2850 fps without a problem.

The .338 RUM doesn't have the reputation for being finicky, and neither does the Edge. Also, brass is about half the cost of the Wby.

I'd have to say that either cartridge makes more sense than the Wby, but I rarely let good sense influence me.

I just really enjoy this rifle, and have no wish to switch to anything else.

This is a good choice to have to make. If you build a custom rifle, either cartridge should be great. Also, the Rums can be built on a Rem action. I wouldn't put the .338 x .378 in a Remington action. A MK V or a big custom action would be my choice.

Tom you are preaching to the choir brother, I have never been one to let good sense get int the way of my desires or a good time. The reason I ask is mor a question of cartridge than rifle action only because I feel more comfortable with a 3 or 9 lug action (the short bolt throw does play a factor but more the feel of a solidity and overall strength) and thus the 700 is out for me. the only option for a 2 lugger in my eyes for me is a mauser action. the 700s just never felt right in my hands. I currently own browning's and a pre 64 model 70 I love dearly. But for this I was thinking weatherby action unless I can find a 3 lug custom. Not considering a sako trg because hell why buy a factory when I can get a custom or semi custom for the same price.
But I figure I can get a bolt face turned for just about any caliber. So I guess my options are still the same I figure accuracy can and will have to be tuned into any factory rifle (bbl stock bedding action truing etc) and whether the rifle groups for me is not as important as whether I can group with it and more importantly can I put steel on target first shot every time.
