Cool video , I'll be installing a RifleBasix trigger and bedding a 300 WSM in a HS stock tomorrow then working up a load for it , this rig has a 30" 1-10 Rockcreek barrel on it the owner wants a 1500yd varmint gun , he is bringing a 200 molyed 210 gr Bergers , 4lbs of VVN560 , 4lbs or VVN165 and 500 Winchester cases to sort through and match prep for this gun.

I haven't done alot of load work for the 300 WSM ,he is expecting 3000 FPS out of it , not sure that it'll do it and keep any kind of case life.

what are the specs on your barrel and whats your load look like , 2900fps seems mid range to mild for the 190's

I use Norma cases, 190 grn smk's, h4831sc out of a 24" shilen 1-10". I haven't chronoed my load yet, so I don't know for sure, just more of an educated guess.

With a custom action, 30" barrel and Norma brass, the 300 WSM will push a 210grn bullet at 3000fps. My gunsmith, here in town, shoots a 300 WSM with a 30" barrel, and he pushes the 208grn A-Max at a tad over 3000fps.

my next barrel im going to be a 28" or a 30"

Diderr,

Go with the 30" barrel. I was told a 1.11 twist barrel is perfect for the 208grn A-Max and 210grn Berger. The 300 WSM cartridge is awesome. I have been reading and hearing that it's performing very well in F-Class and 1000 yard Bench Rest comps.

I just talked to a guy who just built a custom 6.5x300 WSM for Pdoggin past 1000 yards. He said the rifle is designed around a Nesika Model K Action and a Krieger 32", 1-8.5 twist barrel throated for the 139grn Lapua Scenar. He is pushing the 139grn Lapua Scenar at 3500+fps. He said it is unbelievably accurate.

mama mia a 6.5mm 139 grs at 3500 fps thats someting wow  i wonder how is the barrel life in that wildcat , what do you need to make a 6.5-300 wsm i mean you need dies and tools to fireform the cases , you have to custom order the dies ? and if you want to order a barrel in that caliber what specifications does the barrel maker need ?

AKKILL,

The barrel life wont be that great, but either is the regular 6.5x284. I am sure to get 3500fps from the 6.5x300, you will be running higher pressures. To answer your question about the barrel, tell the barrel maker you want a 1-8.5 twist 6.5 cal barrel. Than you will have to find a reamer and have a gunsmith chamber it for 6.5x300 WSM. It will require you to do prep on the brass, necking down, ect. But once you get it ready, you will have one flat shooting rig. The 139grn Lapua has a BC of .615 and at 3500fps, you will have no problem shooting out to 1500 yards.

Remember, I got the 3500fps information from the owner, so I am not real sure if he is being honest. I think he is, and I think the 6.5x300WSM can push that bullet at that speed. Kirby would probable be able to give us some better info about this cartridge. I think he has a 6.5 Allen Mag, and I think I remeber him saying he was pushing the 140grn bullets at those speeds?

I'd have to see that to believe it , not that it can't be done but thats some serious pressures involved , I doubt hes getting more than one reload out of his brass.

the 6.5 Allen mag holds ALOT more powder than the WSM case.

James Jones,

I am sure the 6.5x300 WSM can do it, but I am sure your right about the pressures. However, I am betting he will get more than one reload per case.

I am having a 300 WSM Varminter built, and I will pushing the 125grn BT at 4000+fps. The Norma 300 WSM Brass is handling the pressures fine and the owners are reporting around 4 to 5 firings per case. The powder being used to push the 125grn BT at 4000+fps, in the 300 Varminter, is 75grns of VV-N550. VV-N550 is a powder that gives higher velocities with less pressure. This could have something to do with longevity of the Norma 300WSM brass with this cartridge design. Also, the barrel being used on the 300 Varminter is a 1-15 twist barrel and that too will help decrease pressure.

What case does Kirby's 6.5 Allen Mag use. Is it the 338RUM Case? And how fast is he pushing the 140grn bullets. I am thinking with a 30" barrel, he is getting 3600+fps?

I would like to see Lapua start producing WSM cases. I think if Lapua produced brass for the 270, 7MM and 300 WSM, more people would use these cartridges. The 300 WSM is gaining popularity with the 1000 yard bench rest crowd and the long range pdog crowd as well. I know there are a bunch of guys pushing the 208grn A-Max, at 3000+fps, out of a 30" barrel. The 208grn A-Max has a good BC of .645 and at 3000+fps you will have one flat shooting rifle.

The Winchester brass will work after you do all the case prep. However, it will not handle the pressures like Norma brass can. If you use Winchester or Remington brass, you will not be able to shoot the hotter loads with success. IMO, If the person can afford the Norma Brass, he should be smart and by it and stay clear of the Winchester and Remington Brass.
