I just watched this again, had some down time yesterday with a sick wife and a sleeping little girl. Wanted to watch it and compare it to a Video Shawn Carlock just sent to me.

Anyway, I have great respect for David Tubbs, I have talked to him a couple times and have always found him to be very helpful and a friendly fella to work with and never seemed to PUSH his ideas on anyone. Just says what works for him and lets you decide.

With the championships he has won, how can you argue with his comments.

Anyway, I was watching his video and he was talking about his hunting rifle set up when he was sighting in the rifle. Said he was shooting a 30-8mm Rem Mag, basically a 300 Jarrett.

His load consisted of a 180 gr Sierra loaded to 3430 fps in only a 26.5" barrel.

Does this seem really high to anyone else out there is it just me? I have worked alot with the 300 RUM and it will just push a 180 gr bullet to 3400 fps in a 26" barrel.

Anyway, just curious if any of you with rifles in this chambering or similiar chambering were seeing this level of performance and if so what was the case life you were experiencing.

I thought I'd seen somewhere that Tubb prefers moly coated bullets. They can be loaded a little hotter than uncoated bullets. Think that might explain his velocity? I don't have any experience with the .30-8mm Rem or .300 Jarret.

That seems pretty darn high to me seeing that the 8mmMag case even blown out and improved still isin't close to the capacity of the 300RUM case , I assume he is using some sort of custom action to conatin that pressure?

Even with Moly coated bullets that kind of speed seems like it would be well ito the one shot per case pressure range. If you have a load that shoots 180gr uncoated bullet at 3000fps then you moly coat those same bullets and use the same load out of a moly prepped barrel , 99% of the time the velocity will drop due to the reduced pressure , this allows you to add a couple more grains to the case to gain the lost velocity which in effect increases the load density theoriticaly helping reduce the SD and ES numbers. I tryed the moly thing and diden't find it to be worth while.

Kirby , the wife got the flu? I'm just getting over it and man it is some nasty funk , ended up having to take antibiotics to clear it up but it still managed to get into the chest now I got the cough and tight chest. And I got a flu shot this year!! If you haven't got it yet start taking some high dose viatim C , 3,000-5,000mg a day and alot of Zinc and plenty of water that'll help you fight it off.

if she starts running a fever take her to the doctor , this stuff ain't nothing to play with this year , they have closed several schools and jobs this year down here due to the rapid spread of the flu.

James,

Seems to be a 24-48 hr bug. My little girl woke up wednesday night at 11:00 vomitting. By the time the night was over, we had changed her crib 4 times and ran out of bedding for her!!! Poor little thing. Ended up just holding her on the couch from 3:00 until 5:00 and then put her back to bed after the clothes drier got done with one batch of her bedding. I stayed home with her Thursday and she did very well. Did not want to eat much, a slight fever but tough little thing. That was the end of her vomitting and by Thursday night, she was pretty much back to normal.

Then Friday night, repeat the adventure with my wife. At least she can get herself to the bathroom in time!!! Stayed hom on Saturday to watch the little one and let her rest. By that night she was doing much better.

I am crossing my fingers. So far so good!!

It's so hard when you can't do anything for the little ones!

I understand completely. I've got an 11 month old who is sick, cutting molers and to top it off she wasn't the best sleeper to begin with.

+1 on the vitamin C. I take 2000mg all the time and double that when someone in the house gets sick. I have managed to dodge it even though it has been through the wife and kids twice this winter! (KNOCK ON WOOD!)

300 Jarrett

Kirby
I have a 300 Jarrett built by John Lewis (CPR Rifles) Rem action 26" Hart barrel Will do 180's (Sciricco's & Bal Tips) at 3250. Currently using 7828. It has shot Sciricco 180's in the .01's but not very often. I have tried to push it faster, but in this barrel it is not going to break 3300 and stay together.
It shoots the sciricco's so good, I cannot ask for anymore. I guided Kenny several years ago on a deer hunt in Texas and talked to him at great lenght about the 300 Jarrett. He said "it is ballistictly a 300 Wby. but the case desighn shoots better than the Wby"
My gun will not shoot that fast, wished it would.

Dont have any experience with the 300 jarrett, but, just worked up some loads for a 30-378 with a 27 1/2 Schnieder polygon barrel. 185gr moly Berger vld, 107 grains of retumbo, 10 thou of the lands, chrony said 3680. I said no way! checked it with another gun, chrony was fine. Ive heard the poly barrels have been giving higher velocities. Maybe? Its making me curios, I just ordered 3 barrels. I know Tubb uses Schnieder.

Hello,

I have a 308 Hammonds (I think same as the Jarrett (8MM necked to 30 caliber)) on a custom-actioned repeater (actually two different barrels). I shoot 180gr Accubonds using 82gr of RL22 over my Oehler 35P at 3354 with less than 10 fps deviation in velocity. You can shoot them over 3500, but the Remington brass does not last. I am using A-Square brass and I am still on the original cases. My loading will shoot in the zeros today, tomorrow, next week etc., very consistent. I just wish it were propelled by Hodgdon extreme powder. Oh well, I will just have to convert it over when I run out of the RL-22.

It is a good round and very accurate. At 3354, it almost exceeds the perfomance of my 338 RUM barrel with 225 AB @ 3220 on the same action.

FWIW, David may have meant 3340 vice 3430 as it would make more sense and allow the brass more than one or two uses.

sundevil, those are some crazy numbers! not to flame you, but with my 30-378 I was running 115 gr. of retumbo with a 165 gr. SGK. I was right at 3520 fps. If your numbers are correct then I defiantly want to know more about shnieder barrels! anyone else who has any experience with these barrels please post them. If they are that much faster it would explain Tubb's numbers a little better. thanks for the info. AL oh, my weatherby had a factory barrel on it with the freebore still in it at that time.

180 Velocity

Out of the two 300 win mags I have owned that were factory with a 26inch barrel I was shooting 180 Ballistics tips with one at 3150fps and the other 3181fps. I also had a custom 30-338win with a 26inch Schilen barrel that was pushing a 180 Ballistic tip at 3200fps. With the case he is using I can see him shooting a 180 at 3400fps.
