We all try so hard to prepare for that wonderful time of the year known as "hunting season".

  1. We apply for that deer tag in Wyoming after checking the odds for the different zones.
  2. We start practice shooting from field positions in early spring while there are still small patches of snow on the ground.
  3. We fine tune our beanfield rifle loads.
  4. We install and sight in that new and better long range scope.
  5. Towards the end of summer we are especially nice to our wife so she remembers it when we head west in a few weeks.
  6. We take our trucks in for a service check to be sure it makes the 2,000 mile round trip ok.
  7. We make our way to the Promised Land without incident.
  8. We scout our spot for an hour or so the day before the season opens.
  9. We head out confidently into the field before first light the next morning.
  10. We spot our quarry at 698 yards, set up, take the shot...and miss!

BUT WHY? What are the Top 10 Reasons Why I Missed That Deer At 698 Yards?

The day before you left on your trip the grandsons found your rifle, and were sending morse code to each other with the turrets.

1. Forgot to dial the elevation in. But the windage was spot on!
2. Corrected for the wind the wrong way.
3. Used the drop chart for the 6mm BR.
4. Forgot the drop chart an' pda, shot the elevation correction from an old mans memory.
5. You watched the Democratic convention last week. Now, your subconcious won't allow you to shoot leaded bullets into helpless deer with high powered rifles. You have to run 'em over on the highway.
6. You visited California, now you are preoccupied with same sex marriage. Can't get anything to shoot right, now.
7. You left your ammo on the dashboard with the defrost going. The powder was burning before you fired it.
8. You didn't rezero or use a pda with your sight in conditions saved.
9. You had three cups of coffee after a sleepless night.
10. You used the ammo for your rifle in your XP.

Fall, drop the rifle, and the scope gets knocked off zero. That one has actually happened to me twice in the past five years, so I now know it's a winner should anyone really need an excuse. ;)
