.338 Lapua in a savage

Can it be done, and how difficult is it going to be. Yes, it will be single shot, with a 30" pac nor barrel and a brake, warne tactical base and rings. is there anybody that offers a bolt face opened to super mag? would the .338rum or .338/300 be a better idea? yes this is going to be used over the 1200 yard mark. shot for fun to about 2k, hunting elk and such as far as I still have the required energy. anybody done it? any thoughts?

I've seen it done once and this is what I remember about it.
It needs to be built on a RUM action with the larger barrel shank, 1.125" I believe and have the bolt head opened up to handle the larger case.
Also you don't use the barrel nut setup, instead the barrel is installed like a Remington.

Build a 338 Edge and you will be much happier and so will the rifle!!! You will get everything the Lapua will offer in the Edge and it is a much better match to that receiver.

Could the Lapua be fitted into a Savage, as a single shot yes but there is no need with the Edge(338-300 RUM).

To answer your question I know at one time Sharp Shooters Supply carried the bolt head for the 338 Lapua. Have not checked lately to see if they still do.
I am a big fan of the 338 Lapua but in a standard bolt action (Savage Rem. or whatever) I would go with the 338 Edge or 338 RUM. The main advanage of the Lapua is better quaity brass but that also comes at a price, more expensive.

I am thinking of doing the same, I have a savage long action, and was told it can be done, a repeater costs a lot more to build, but a single shot would be a lot easier and cheaper, i may go the single shot route...

I was looking at ballistics for the 300 grn smk, and see that it might be near 100 moa for a 2000 yard hit from a 100 yd zero, and was wondering how people are doing it, special bases? i know the 20 moa are easy to find for a savage, but that is a lot of elevation, how would one go about doing this?

I have had numerous people tell me that the 7mm wsm is the way to go, but i will hunt something big sooner or later with it

I'm waiting on a Shilen barrel for my Savage 338 Lapua. It will be using a standard shank and barrel nut. It will be single shot. I'll be sure to post how it works out.

The article said a gun maker named Shawn Carlock really builds nice rifles. However, with traveling around the airports, would a different head stamp on a bullet than the rifle cause problems. I know there are dies for the 338 RUM..Being that there is only a slight advantage for the edge would the trouble be worth it.

i would assume the 338rum, and the 338 edge would be about the same price to build and shoot, so other than commercially available ammo it would be beneficial to do the edge....

Shouldn't be too bad if you start with a savage that was already a rum.

If not, the opening can be machined to rum size and add a $20 rum mag box and follower from midway.

I have a 7mm rem mag, would this action be long enough? it is a long action, but i am wondering if the ultramag had a longer one

tell me about making ammo, is it as simple as stretching the neck on 300 rum and loading them, or is there more to it than that?

a barrel, thats it, it has the same bolt face, mag box and follower

i wish mine was 300 rum, easy fix there for making a 338 edge

I would do the Savage in a 338-300 ultramag instead of the Lapua for several reasons. The two are virtually identical in performance and your action matches the ultra much better. Why spend all the money on modifications to shoot the Lapua. The ultra is cheaper to shoot. I have several of both of these.
