newbie with a savage

hey guys, just dropping by to say thanks for the great articles so far. i'm just getting into some long range shooting. but for me, long range is 300 yrds.. haha. i'm just a punk kid to most but i love getting out there and shooting. i just got my hands on my cusins 22-250. and its amazing for shooting the coyotes. but then i found this website and guess what. my everyday elk gun is a 300 win mag (savage). so it looks like im on a good start with the accutrigger. thinking i'll get a bipod and a new stock. something with an adjustable cheek rest and a more vertical "pistol" grip. and go from there. right now it has a simmons scope. not sure what the numbers are on it. but it will prob work for 500+ yards i would say.

i found the site sharp shooters supply, but is there any other sites i should look into for a stock? any newbie tips or things to watch for that you vets could enlighten me on?

Sharp Shooter Supply is good, check out their barrels, you can install a barrel yourself with a few tools. Here's a site to check out for stocks bolt handles, recoil lugs, etc. Stockade Gun Stocks - specializing in custom rifles I've got the prarie dog special and the "elk stalker" thumbhole is on the way. Bell and Carlson has a nice line of stocks called medalist, with aluminum bedding block wide forend etc.

You have a rifle that's very easy to upgrade, Shilen makes savage replacment barrels for $305, I've been very happy with mine, in good conditions it'll shoot 1/4 MOA out to 500yds and 1/2 MOA to 800yds. There are guys here that target practice 1 mile (1760yds) and beyond, if you want to get into long range shooting you've come to the right place.

nice stock. i like the thumbhole stocks but i have never shot on before. i was told they are not practical for the usual short range hunting. and they kinda get in the way. guess i'll head to the store and hold one. maybe that will give me an idea.

as for my barrel. it shoots straight at 200yrds. but i have been spending my time with that 22-250 so i haven't played with my 300 at distance yet. if it does shot stright i'll prob stick with it for a couple of month's. but i will def want to change it. would ask some questions to ya about what to look for. but i will do some research first.

The factory barrels can be quite accurate, I'm still using the factory barrel from this rifle on another, because it shoots so well.

i have heard some arguement on muzzle brakes. some say that it looses some distance. any thoughts on that?

there full of you no what. what a brake will do is stop the barrel jump and help you from flinching from being be beat on by the recoil. all you have to do is look at all of the pic on here and see how many big bore rifle don't have a brake. that will answer your ??? i wouldn't have a rifle with out a brake i even have one on my 223 to stop the barrel jump. you may want to take a look at savage shooter.com lot of good info over there. Fred at sharp shoots is a great guy to deal with.

thats what i expected.. there is a gun in my little town that does muzzle brakes. i guess i'll go talk with him sometime soon.
