I,m thinking of buying a Bushnell Elite 8-32xx40 4200 rifle scope(Multi-X) to put on a Savage 12FV in .223 to to used for varmint and for long distance ground hog shoots(paper targets 100-500yds). However I know little about this scope-quality, repeatability, clarity, etc. If anyone can help with their opinion I would be greatful.

I like the 4200 series they are a good bang for the buck. You may run into a problem with the 8-32x40 because it only has 20 inches of vertical adjustment. Basically you've got 10 inches up and 10 inches down to get your bullets where you want them. If you buy some of the Burris Signature Rings and use the inserts to move your point of impact before using your scope adjustments it should work fine.
I've got a 4-16x40 and a 6-24x40 in the 4200 series. In regards to resolution and to my eyes it looks as clear as my Leupold scopes and my Nightforce. My Zeiss scopes look better in terms of resolution and in light gathering. I have not performed a box test on the Bushnells but it seems to be accurate out to 400 yards on paper for me.

If your not shooting past 500 yrds you don't need 32x. I've got the Elite 4200 6-24x42 with mildot and I zeroed it at 500 yrds. This way I can hold over-under from 100-700 yrds no problem. But if you want to dial in then you won't have enough elevation. In that case I'd say go with one of there new Elite 6500 which has a total of 80 MOA of travel.

I just ordered this scope, cant wait to try it out. It'll give you 24x and still manage a decent amount of internal adjustment (30mm tube) Might be a nice fit for your application as well.

I am also considering getting one of the 4200 Elites for my 6.5x47 Lapua. What would the total vertical moa be for the 4-16x40 and the 6-24x40.
I am also looking at the Nikon Monarchs in the same magnifications, but have no idea what the total moa for these scopes are either,,,,, and can't seem to find it anywhere on the net......
If anyone has any info on this I would appreciate hearing from you. I would like to be able to go out to 1K or further.

The Elite 4-16x40 and the 6-24x40 don't have enough travel to dial in past 500 yrds. For better you'd need the 6-24x50 Elite 4200 30mm or any of the new 5600 series which would be good out to 1,000 yrds no problem.

Adj. range both ways up and down
4200 series:
4-16x40: 50 total elevation
6-24x40: 40 total elevation
8–32x40: 20 total elevation
6-24x50: 50 total elevation
6500 series:
4.5-30 x 50: 90 total elevation
2.5-16 x 42: 80 total elevation
2.5-16 x 50: 80 total elevation
