I went out to South Dakota last summer an hour or two north of the Black Hills. Went through 600 rounds in two days. Had a great time but would like to see someplace new this year for Prarie Dogs. Does any one have any recommendations for another state for a lot of Prarie Dog action?

I have been told Wyoming is an awesome place to shoot PDogs. So, I have planned a Pdog trip for my friend and I for June 2008 at the Trophy Ridge Outfitters Ranch located in Carlile, Wyoming.
I have heard, and been told, it is a great place to shoot Pdogs and the area is absolutely beautiful. The ranch is also 15 minutes away from the Devils' Tower National Monument. If you have ever seen the Movie "Close and Counters of A Third Kind" you know what I am talking about.
I have been informed there are many Pdogs to shoot at, and we would need to bring more than one rifle if possible. I was also told shots are possible out to 2000+ yards if you have the proper set up.
So, we are bringing five rifles. Here is the list of rifles we are bringing;
1. 223 AR-15 Varmint set up
2. 22-250 Remington 700 VLS
3. 308 Win Remington 700 Police
4. 300 Varminter Custom Rifle
5. 30-338 Lupa Improved Custom Rifle for the shots past 800 yards.
Optics that will be used;
1. Leupold-4.5x15x50mm LRT-(223)
2. Leupold-6.5x20x50mm LRT-(22-250)
3. Leupold-6.5X20X50 LRT-(308 Win)
4. Nightforce NXS-8x32x56mm MLR reticle-(300 Varminter)
5. Nightforce NXS-12x42x56mm MLR reticle-(30-338 Lupa Improved)
6. Swaro Range Finder-still need to buy (oooch!)
7. Swaro Bi-nocs-still need to buy (oooch!)
We will be using the following bullets;
1. 223-40grn V-Max for shots from 50 to 300 yards.
2. 22-250-50grn V-Max for shots from 50 to 400 yards
3. 308 Win-110grn V-Max for shots from 50 to 500 yards

It should be a fun trip. We are going for four days, so we should get plenty of chances to get into the 1500 yard club. I can't wait! I will post a review of the trip when I get back
***Side note: For those who are wondering, The 300 Varminter is based off the 300 WSM Cartridge and designed to shoot the 125grn BT at 4000fps out of a Bartlien 30" 1-15 twist barrel very accurately.

That area of WY has a lot of pd's in it. Or at least it did the last time I was there...
About 18 months ago.
I don't know about the Piarirrie Dogs in that area, but the area is full of antelope. I was out that way a few years ago, just on a roadtrip to knowwhere, and driving down I-25 I could not believe the number of antelope I saw.
It's a great area and I hope you have lots of fun. If you don't it's your own fault.

up in the panhandle if you can get access to some land to hunt when i was a teen back in the late 70s and early 80s the ranchers and farmers up around littlefield and sudan area where more than happy for us shoot them. just had to ask permission . i have a second cuosin up there that has a couple of thousand acres in the crp just east of muleshoe going to hunt mule deer up there this coming season i'll call and see if he has any dog towns on any of his property

Nobody mentioned ND for a good spot. We have a few great places down in the Solen Area. And plenty of spots down in the Far SW area of the state. I shoot regularly at farmers and can burn up quite a few rounds. THose dogs get hunted quite a bit so we get to stretch our shooting out past 300yds most of the time.

That's a good area. I'm headed out there myself in June, as my usual haunts in MT have been hit by the plague.
I'm taking .223, .220 Swift and a 6mmBR myself, but with way more ammo.
I'm figuring 2000 rounds for the 223s (two shooters, four rifles), and close to 1000 rounds for the Swift (you know which one that is, Jake). I haven't started loading for the 6BR, but I may only load 500 for it.

The prairie dogs were trembling all winter long, wondering if I was coming back with those two rifles.
I had to tweak the loads a little, but they're both still laser beams.

I am glad there working well for you. What powder, primer, brass and bullet are you using for the 220 Swift? Also, what velocities are you getting with the 220 Swift.
What powder, primer, brass and bullet are you using for the 223 and what velocities are you getting with the 223. I used the 50grn V-Max at a velocity of 3350fps when I had her. I made many of shots on squirrels and rabbits out to 500+ yards with that rig. My longest kill, with that rifle, was 598 yards on a cotton tail.
I am slowly replacing my rifle collection. My 300 Varminter will be my first new custom rifle since I sold all of my other custom rigs. I am looking forward to getting it. I wont be receiving it until late April, so I had to cancel my trip to Wyoming, in May. I am going to try and go in June if everything works out, however, I am thinking the Pdog trips wont happen until 2008. It looks like it will be all California shooting this year. I am kind of glad, because I am still working on putting together a fast twist rig for shots past 800 yards.
I have not decided on what caliber I am going to use. I know I am going to use the Lapua 338 Cartridge, I just need to decide on caliber. My friend has a 30-338 Lapua Improved with a 1-11 twist 32" Krieger barrel. He is shooting the 208grn A-Max and it's awesome. I was was thinking about building the 30-338 Lapua Improved. However, I am being talked into a 7mm-338 Lapua Improved with a 34" 1-9 twist Krieger barrel throated for the 180grn Berger. With a 34" barrel, I will push the 180grn Berger at a velocity of between 3500 to 3600fps. One of the guys at my range, who owns a 7mm-338 Lapua Improved, said it's the most accurate rifle he has ever owned. He is pushing the 180grn Berger at 3575fps. I guess the question is, how fast will the 7mm-338 Lapua Improved shoot the 180grn Berger? I would like to get 3600+fps for maximum performance.

NXS...MLR reticle
I am planning to buy a Nightforce scope 12-42x56 for long range prairie dog shooting,I am wondering if there have been any negative issues with the MLR reticle being used in low light conditions or any trouble finding the "cross-hairs" against a brushy back ground.
