2nd Annual 1,000 Yard Cold turkey Shoot

The 2nd Annual 1,000 Yard Cold Turkey Shoot competition will be June 12-14 in Sundance, WY.
Distances will be 500 yards, 750 yards and 1,000 yards.
5-shot groups at each distance.
There will be two classes of specialty handguns:
Unlimited and Production.

I have never attempted my 7 mm br at those distances, not much for a scope on it.

I would be interested. New to all of this but I think it would be a fun challenge.

It is a lot of fun.
Some specific rules will be available by next week for sure, but the production class allows barrels up to 15 inches long (brake does NOT count toward barrel length) and the weight will be either no more than 6.5 or 7 pounds.
Ulimited has a max 16 pound weight and barrel can be up tp 18 inches long. Again, a muzzle brake does not count toward barrel length.

For both classes any type of rest can be used.

Different than last year where only one 5-shot group was made at each distance, we will shoot at all three distances each day.

Not shooting for score, only for group.
A 7mm BR could be used, but I recommend something more to be competitive.

What do you recommend? For Handguns that would work for something like all I have is Thompson Centers. I dont know if that would be the right handgun but it is what I have and it is a place to start. I have shot mine out to 300 yards. I have a new 600 yard range I can now work with so I will have to practice. Like I said I am new to this but I am very interested. Maybe the best thing to do is bring what I have and learn from there.

First question, what frame do you have (Encore or Contender)?

Quickest way to get set-up would be to order a 1-8 twist 6.5-284 barrel from MGM and have them throat it for the 140 class VLD's.
If you want to shoot both classes then get a 15 inch heavy taper barrel, then I would add a brake. Get a pillar bedded forend that will work well off of a front rest. If you have a Leupy or NF rifle scope, use them since they have better eye relief. If using LER scopes then the Burris 3-12 is the way to go.
Other possibilities would be the 284 Win or the 280AI.
Get a picatinny base and then use the Burris Signature Zee Rings so you can build MOA into your rings if needed.

How do I get ahold of MGM? I think I would go with a 280 AI. I just ordered a custom rifle this morning in that cal. It would be fun to have a T/C bbl in the same.

I have a Leupold 4.5-14x40 LR B&C and a 6.5-20x40 LR B&C right now that are not sitting on guns. Would that work for this application?

The Cold Turkey Shoot 2008 ​

Rules and Information​

June 12, 13, & 14, 2008 (HANDGUNS ONLY)​

Entry Fee: $50.00 Production $50.00 Unlimited Re-entries $30.00
Entry Fee: Spouse & Children (under 15 yrs) $30.00
Children must be 10 yrs or older to compete, also must be supervised by an adult at all times while on range.
1/2 of the original entry fees will be paid back in prize money.
There will also be a drawing for nice prizes to be given out.
Three days of shooting and fun.

Please try to have your entries mailed in by May 15,2008

You will draw for your shooting times, the morning of June 12.
You will draw 3 times, 1 for each day or time you shoot.

If shooting Production & Unlimited you will draw a time for each pistol.
Unlimited (16 lbs) 18" barrel.
Production (6 1/2 lbs) 15" barrel.

Final score size will be determined by the aggregate of your 3 original groups at each range.
Only original round of this group will count for score. No re-entries will count for score.

June 12 You will shoot one group at each distance of 500, 750, & 1,000 yds.
June 13 The same
June 14 The same

Production Class--Only Production guns
Unlimited Class--Unlimited & Production guns allowed

You will shoot in the same order each day as which you have drawn your time.
This is to hopefully even out the climatic conditions. We will not shoot during any rain.

Targets will be: 18" with 3" bull at 500 yds
24" with 3" bull at 750 yds
48" with 6" bull at 1,000 yds

Only shots on or cutting target paper will count for score.
Line Rep. has complete authority!
No guns on line until targets are set.

You will have 5 minutes to set up, when called to line.
Guns must remain unloaded with safety flag inserted in the chamber, until Line Rep commands the start.
Then time will start for shooting your group.
You will have 10 minutes to shoot your group with as many sighters as you chose, to shoot.
ALL SIGHTERS will be shot on swinger targets ONLY.
(This means a 10 minute total for group and for sighter shots)

If more than 5 shots are on your target, your group will be the 5 largest of the group, unless, crossover fire has been confirmed by scoring officials.
If you think you have cross shot onto another target, we will stop shooting and check targets.

Each Target will be numbered, corresponding to the Shooter's Bench Number.
The Shooter and his Spotter only will be allowed on the line, to set-up the shooters bench.
This year there will be a line marked, so it will be clear where the shooting line is.
Once the command is given to shoot for score, only the shooter will be allowed to handle and adjust the firearm and equipment.
Spotters can only spot for and advise the shooter. No coaching from behind the line permitted.

When the command to ground and unload all firearms is given (for whatever reason) by the line commander, the shooter must unload his gun, insert safety flag, and back away at least 2 steps away from his table.
Shooters will remain at their tables, until all shooters have completed shooting, and the Line Rep. has called cease fire.

Safety Rules:
Line Rep. has complete authority.
No loaded guns on grounds, except on shooting benches on the firing line.
No guns on line until targets are set.
Safety flags will be in guns at all times.
Safety flags are only to be pulled out on the shooting tables on firing line, when it is your turn to shoot.
Safety flags will be issued at the drawing, only the flags issued will be acceptable for use at the shoot.
TWO WARNINGS AND YOU WILL BE GONE FROM THE RANGE.
This rule will be enforced for the safety of everyone!

On June 13th, there will be a free Bar-B-Q
*If you are bringing non-shooting family members, please let us know, when you send in your entries to ensure plenty of food for the Bar-B-Q. Please feel free to bring your family.
All children must be supervised by an adult at all times, while on the shooting grounds.

There will be guest speakers on Thursday and Friday evenings after competing, covering long range shooting and varminting.

There are plenty of things to do and see within reasonable driving distance:
Devils Tower---Mt Rushmore--Crazy Horse--Caves--Deadwood--Custer State Park --Bear Country--Dinosaur Museum--plus other museums --horse back riding, and of course, shopping.

There is a campground east of town. Has showers & pool. Mountain View Campgrounds (307) 283-2270 Another campground east of town is at the trail head. This is primitive with only restrooms.
West of town are more campgrounds in the forest, also primitive.

How do I get ahold of MGM? I am going to go with a 6.5-284 bbl. I thought about going with the 280 but after talking with a friend of mine he said that he currently loads the 6.5-284 and loves it. Heck, why not try something new. It cant hurt. What do you think about the scopes I listed above? Is that something you would recommend? What are other people shooting at this event? I would assume my T/C's might be very basic for an event like this. Thanks again, Jon

Either scope would work fine.

Of course if you got one cartridge chambered for production class (15")and the other you were interested for unlimited then you could use both scopes

I have a couple of Mark 4's (6.5-20 and a 8.5-25) and two Vari-X 3's in 8.5-25. Yes, I have that many SP's with rifle scopes.
I would sure encourage a good brake when using riflescopes.
FYI--I do not see a full field of view when using riflescopes on SP's--BE SAFE!
