Bison with 375 Cheytac and .50 BMG

Here is a cow Bison I shot with my .375 Cheytac this year at a distance of 350 meters. While it was not a real long range shot it was the only shot I had. The bullet went through the lungs and destroyed the Aortal arch. She took two or three steps and died. The rifle was made by John VanDyke

Here is the exit wound from the Barnes X bullet at 3400 FPS (Barrel is 34").

Here is the cow Bison that I took last year at 400 meters or so with a .50 BMG. I used a Barnes X bullet for that one as well.

She spun around twice and died. The bullet passed though the lungs and exited with a 2" exit wound. When we opened her up the lungs were destroyed as well as some of the arteries. Next year I am going to try to get a Bull as I am going to have a new .50 built (boltgun with 36" barrel).
Both of them were average sized cows (12-1400 lbs)

Very nice. I really want a Bison hunt. Hopefully, not this year but the next. For some reason I really want to use a muzzle loader..... I have always wanted to kill one with a muzzleloader.

The Cheytac bullet was a 300 grain Barnes TSX with BC of .357 at 3400 fps. The Kill with the .50 was a Barnes X 647 grain with a BC of .355 2900 fps if I remember correctly

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. If it truly has that bc, that cartridge would be a heck of a lot less ideal for long range shooting than almost every gun in my safe save my 223! Not poking fun here, just amazed at the low bc.

That is the information I got of of the Barnes web site for those particular bullets. But yes, both guns seem to perform much better with heavier bullets (at least for the .50 - I have yet to be able to find any 350 grain bullets for the Cheytac). When I took the Bison with the .50, The only hunting rounds that I could get were the Barnes X. At the time, I was unaware that A-max was a good bullet for hunting (or so I am told).

I had the ammunition loaded for me by the same guy who made the rifle (Cheytac). When I took it out to the range to zero it at 300 I found that I could get about .75" groups out of it. I am not so certain that kind of accuracy would hold past 500 meters or so.

Now, my question to you or anyone else reading this; do you know where I can get better bullets for the .375 Cheytac than the Barnes 300 grain X bullet?

It's been a few years since this thread so I am currious about the evolution of your bullet selection since this post. There are currently several bullet options available in .375" with ballistic coefficients allegedly exceeding 1.0 but they are not cheap. Many of these were not likely available 4+ years ago when you initiated this discussion. I am in favor of the Rocky Mountain bullets but I'd like to get away from having to pay more than $2.00 each. The SMK's may be a good option but I am skeptical in using them as a hunting bullet. I guess one cannot have it all . . .
