Anyone here use a .270? What sort of velocity have you managed to get with the 130gr SSTs, 140gr SSTs, or 130gr Accubonds?


Anyone used the barnes TSX bullets in .270?


Looks like VV560 or Rl-22 are the best powders for 130-140gr bullets

I couldn't get past accuracy issues with SSTs. Accubonds and Ballistic tips worked the best for both accuracy and terminal performance.

In a 24" douglas barrel the 130s would go just under 3200.

In a 27" Lilja barrel 130 and 140s are pretty much at 3200. Could go more but it seems not worth it.

IMRs data didn't show particularly good velocity, I want to get 3100-3200 out of my 24" barrel.

If Rl-22 doesn't work for me I will try the 4831, I've tried 4350 but I can't get good accuracy with 130 grainers, I can get .6" with 90gr hollowpoints though

I have gotten some good results using the SST's with my factory Rem 700. I tried several powders and found that RL-22 worked good in the 2950 range but as I worked it up the groups spread. I only have a 22" barrel so that is getting up on the top end for mine.

I swapped over to Ramsot hunter early last year and found that I could hit 3100 with the 130gr SST and the groups were great ranging under 1" at 200yds, with some going under.

I haven't tried the Barnes in a while nor the 140's. However when I did shoot the 140gr BT I used RL-22 and found it geave the best results.

In my factory Rem. 700 with 24 inch barrel and the Sierra 130 Gameking I get outstanding accuracy and average 3125 fps with 60 grs H-4831. This bullet does a number on a deer. BANG FLOP.

I have been loading .270 Win for about 25 years for my factory Rem 700, 22" barrel, and have recently been experimenting with some new loads.

My long-time load is a Hornady 130 gr SP over 56.0 gr IMR 4350 at 3060 fps.

I could not get a 130 gr SST to group well.

A Nosler 150 gr Partition over 54.0 gr IMR 4350 gives me 2930 fps, with marginal accuracy.

I am tweaking a new load with a 140 gr Accubond over 55.0 gr IMR 4350 at around 3000 fps that groups well.

As always, every rifle is different. I could not get good results with RL-22. My go-to powder for several calibers is IMR 4350.

I use H4831SC for my 270s. I have found very good accuracy and performance using 130gr Ballistic Tips for deer sized game. I never put the Accubonds to meat, but accuracy was about the same.

Winchester brass and primers, shooting IIRC 3160fps from a 24" barrel with a moderate load.

I used R 19 pushing 140 gr Barnes TSX. I got about 3100 fps out of my 26" Remington Sendero.

Initial results now that I got my rifle back with new stock,

I can get .5" with a 140gr accubond over 57gr ADI AR2213SC (H4831SC equivilent I think) at 2941FPS average, groups opened up for the 2 powder charges above that that I tried, but there were no pressure signs so I will load some a bit hotter and see what sort of velocities I can get, hopefully something over 3,000 will group

The 130 grn bullets are better than 1/2"at 200 yds as long as you want to shoot.
I have another load with the same set-up but only 58.7 grms of H4831 and the 150 Ballistic tip This load has an ES under 15fps so far ( I have only shot 11 shots). I found that the H4831 gets closer ES once you "arrive" at the max back off 3/10ths of a grain and play with the seating depth. I'm loading to over max loads so please start 3 grains lower and work up
I have yet to see a 270 not shoot H4831 near top velocity poorly. I worked up loads for a shop years ago in Vt. All the hype in print and now on the net has yet to prove that wrong. If your looking for velocity and accuracy in a 270 try these loads. The low es and insensitivity to temps are going to make a great long range load.

I tried Reloader-22 and IMR-4350.The IMR-4350 gives me the tightest groups and around 3000fps with 130gr Hornady SP.My Remington 700 just does not like a boatail bullet.Groups 270 Win. 4 shots 100yds on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
