338 RUM reloading info

Gentlemen: I'm new to this site and just recently acquired a Remington LSS 338 RUM. I did so not necessarily because I wish to shoot at 600 yds (though that would be great if I could learn to do so) but because I'm a lefty and wanted something in 338 cal., in SS, with a synth. or lamin. stk., in left-handed bolt action that had a reputation for a high degree of accuracy. There are only 2 rifles manuf. that make such a rifle to my knowledge; Remington and Weatherby.

I love the looks of the Weatherby but wouldn't abide by the weight of the rifle. That left the Remington. Having provided that background info, I'm interested in producing 338 Winchester recoil and velocity-level ammunition to start with and hopefully work up to the full potential of the 338 RUM.

Can anyone provide me with reloading info that will allow me to produce mild loads of this type? I did quite a bit of reloading in the past but it has been a while and am just getting back into it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Mild Loads for 338 RUM

Thanks for the info. My current plan is to you the 338 RUM for Elk hunting here in Utah and perhaps my old stomping grounds in SW Colorado during early morning and evening when they are out feeding and such. I use my 35 Whelen Rem. 7600 during the day to stalk them in the dark timber.

Do you happen to have any info for a 225 g bullet? Any additional info on the part of the general Forum would be appreciated.

I have worked up loads for three of these calibered rifles and all will shoot under 3/8" at 100 and under 1.2" @400:

90gr 7828 w 225 Accubond (duplicates nosler custom ammo) (.303")

100gr H1000 w/ 225 Accubond (.375")

101gr H1000 w/225 Accubond (.090")

Two were Remington factory guns and the other was a custom one. I have found the use of H1000 in these guns minimize sensitivity to temp changes.

Finally a site where I can find people shooting this cal. I have finally come up with enough brass to start playing. I have not loaded yet for this Rem 700SS but I am sick of factory 250 grain bullets. I am looking for some smaller and faster loads. I have all sorts of lead and some powder. Thanks for the leads above as some look really good. Are there any lighter and faster loads one would recommend?

I think 200 gr -210 gr is about as light as you would want to go with the
338 RUM.
I have used this load for elk, mule deer and black bear, all one shot kills
with golf ball size exits and dropping the game in their tracks-

Thanks. I hear most people liking the 225 grain bullets. I have also read that at 210 you do not gain much velocity so not worth the loss of energy at impact. What are your thoughts? Have loaded heavier than 250 for fun?

I shot one WT deer with the 250 gr PT, most dramatic kill I have ever witnessed.
I have since setteled on the 225 gr AB and PT in my 338 RUM. I am awaiting the release of the 250 gr AB later this year. That will become the new load for my 338 RUM.

I like the 300 grain Sierra Matchkings in my 338 RUM. At 2770 fps its just a hair slower than the 338 Edge. I would like to try the 250 Accubonds when they come out.

I'm using the 225g accubond with 102g of Retumbo. I'm also going to work up a load using H1000.

I'm also shooting a left hand LSS.

I have a .338 RUM custom with a 30" Pac-Nor three grove with this setup I use 98grs of H- 4831 with a 180gr BT at 3600 FPS across a crony and not hot at all shoots very wel I use it for groundhogs it realy make muss of them.I use 97grs of H-1000 with 225 SST at 3300FPS again cronyed,and last but not least I use 93grs of Retumbo with a 300gr SMK at 2975 FPS I love all three of these loads and would not change a thing on them.Iuse Fed 215 match primers with all of them,not a better primer out there.Tim
