Which Cartridge?

I'm looking to re-barrel my 22-250, only because of the 1-14 twist. I'm looking for accuracy foremost. Parameters are short action, 300 yards with most often less, magazine fed, velocity for minimal drop, enough sectional density for whitetails and preferably a short barrel (20 to 22in) for manuverability in tree stands.

I'm thinking 6mm-250imp (6mm International). I'm a little concerned about the velocity out of such a short barrel. Without trying to start a debate the intended purpose would be for head/upper neck shots on does but with the ability to take out a shoulder if nessesary. All of the other cartridges I was considering require long barrels like the 6-284 or 224TTH and the benchrest rounds do not feed well. I may just have to get the longer barrel.

Give me some suggestions please.

I have an AR10 with a 20" barrel and the .308 performs very well with handloads. I prefer Barnes TSX in a lighter weight. Barnes claims that with their bullets you can use the lightest bullet in an acceptable range. I feel that a 150 gr TSX will do most anything a 168 gr conventional design bullets will do and you can pust the lighter bullet faster gaining trajetory advantage. The .308 is used in 1000 yard bench and FClass competition, so it speaks for itself being an inherantly accurate design.

I think you should look at the 6.5x47 Lapua cartridge. Very accurate, enough wallop to kill a deer, short action, and will still work with a short barrel. And there are a good selection of bullets from light to heavy. Heck, you could even do a 6x47 Lapua too.

You mean other than the fact that it is boring, inconsistent, overbore, finicky, and outdated? No offense. I'm just being a smart@$$!

I'm sure it will work fine for mid range hunting but it surely wouldn't be a pick of mine. It was invented to fill a gap in winchesters line and compete with Remington's 6mm. So they took a 308 and necked it to 6mm and there's the idea of it. The 6.5 and 6 x47 were built with BR standards in mind and engineered to be THE competitive cartridges in long range comp. Which would you rather have?

Which would I choose

Easy choice, .243. I do not ever recall seeing 6.5 or 6 x 47 factory loaded ammo in the sporting goods stores I shop, nor would I expect to find them in the middle of nowhere store near hunting camp. Does a lot of good to have a gun chambered in a caliber that you can not get ammo for in a pinch. (Yes, I will admit that I am one of "those guys" who forgot to pack the ammo. Good thing my gun was a .308!)

If you go 243 go improved. I dont see much advantage, but it is a lot less boring I would second the 6.5x47 or 6-6.5x47.

I am a fan of the 6mm Rem. I have had good luck with it, though it is not the best looking round out there. I would look at it in a improved version. What do you guys think of a 6BR Improved, shooting the 105's or 107's. I thnk that it would be just what is needed to get the right velocity. Would be hard to feed but with a little work I think that it could be done. Or have the bolt face opened up and do a 243wssm. Just some of my ideas. Some of the things that I have been looking at.

For hunting whitetails in the southern states I use a .243 Win, boring, maybe a little. I use the 95 grain ballistic tip over AA3100 in a Sako 1/10 w/23" barrel, very terminal performance and no issues w/the baltips. I shoot the doe's in the neck, the bucks high shoulder.

Most shots are under 200 yards. I'm going to try the 85gr bonded bullets next.

Factory fodder available everywheres if the baggage jockies loose your bag w/ammo in it.

Go with the 243 Ackley and put a 1 in 8 twist on it. You can shoot the bigger pills and have a great deer and coyote package.

Brass is easy to fireform. And this round is extremely accurate !

7 oh 8 is a great cartridge. In the wildcat days of the cartridge I use to hunt with a 18" barrel min-mauser action in that caliber. Took lots of deer and several elk with it. I pick up rifle length Savage barrels, cut and crown to 17"s, re-chamber to 284 Win and install on my Strikers for an extra 100-150fps velocity.
