What Kind of Energy at Long Range?

I really enjoyed all the replies to the "Bullet Performance.....?" thread I started some time back.

Now! I know you guys have something that calculate bullet speed and bullet energy at whatever yardage. I think ya'll call it a PDC or something like that. I'm still not up to speed on all of the lingo you guys use.

Any way I would like to see what kind of energy and velocity your bullets have at 500 and 1000 yards. Please list caliber, barrel length and bullet weight/brand...

Just remember that velocity and energy mean nothing unless the bullet is properly designed to do what you require of it at the point of impact on the target of your choice.

I have never recovered the above bullet in deer but did get one back in an elk when it traveled almost full body length before stopping in a hind quarter on the off side.

I agree! That was got me to thinking about this thread. In the reloading section there was a reply to one of my thread there about bullets not making it to the target. I'd heard of it happening in .22 stuff, just not in real calibers

what ss7mm said. Only mine is a 270 AM shooting 195s at a little less velocity but still more than 2K FPE at 1K. Also 169s are over 2k FPE @ 1K.

Really wouldn't want to shoot big North American game with less.

Yeah in the reloading thread I was asking about loads for 7mmRUM. I would have never thought 7mm would have bullet constrution issues while in flight. I certainly know when it hits meat, bullet construction is vital.

AM stands for Allen Magnum.

Here is the info for my 338AM 300gr Sierra Match King, 3300fps muzzle velocity

muzzle 3300fps 7200+ ft lbs
500yds 2770fps 5100+ ft lbs
1000yds 2300fps 3500+ ft lbs
2000yds 1500fps 1500+ ft lbs

You just neck down a 338 Lapua case to the proper dimensions and then fire-form it. Bodda bing, bodda boom instant guided missle launcher.

BC runs high enough that until you dial it and shoot it at extended ranges you won't believe what it does, and how easy it does it.

With a max load, dial in 27.5 moa elev. and I'm dead on at 1500 yards.

Can the 338 Lapua be done on a Savage action? Is the case head extra large?

It could be done, but I sure would not have it done. You could go with an Edge and be just as happy, and the Savage action would be happier too.

Why would a 338 be better then the 7mm in a Savage action? Would a fired shot eject without pulling the bolt on the new Savage Target Action? I will not have enough money for a long time to build a full blown custom on a BAT or Nesika action. I have had good luck with Savages, and the new action should be accurate enough, plus the switch barrel thing I like. A laminated stock for >$200, a $500 action, the trigger should be good enough, $500ish for a good barrel and brake and I should be in action. +$300ish for components and dies. Then I can swap barrels to practice and not melt my barrel.

A short action Savage will eject an Ultra Mag length fired case.

A 338 isn't better than a 7mm, they are just different. It all depends what you want to use them for. A 338 barrel will last longer (given the same case capacity). It all depends what you want to do with them. In my opinion, the 338-300Ultra (Edge) is the ultimate caliber for an easy Savage build. The Lapua based wildcats are a little too much for a savage build in my opinion.

Sounds like you have a good plan on your Savage build. If you start with a caliber that is the same bolt head as your ultimate build, you will have a practice barrel and as you said, you can swap it for serious shooting.
