338 Edge Short Mag?

Not that I need another rifle but, I like them.

I have kicked around about 1,000 ideas and the problem is that I just cannot seem to come up with any way to improve on my 338 Edge. It is a little heavy for hunting but, it is so easy to steady at long ranges that I do not want a lighter one.

I wonder what performance would be like by taking the 300 Rem SAUM or 300 WSM and necking it up in a similar manner to the 338 Edge?

Would it still shoot? You think a short action would be long enough to seat the 250 SMK's out very long?

300 WSM and 325WSM have the same capacity correct? If so it would be easy to size. As for it's effectiveness or ballistic potential I will leave that to someone who knows more than I.

I've thought of that a lot. Quickload says that a 26" barrel should push a 200gr Accubond up to around 2900 and a 30" up to 3050 max.

I don't have any experience with it, but have spent some time looking at it.

Q,

My dad just got his 338 WSM finished and so far with lighter bullets like the 225 NAB it has the same potential as a 338 Win Mag almost to the number. I'll let you know more when I extract the info from my dad.

Well you definitely wouldn't be improving your .338 edge performance with that set up!!!! In fact I can't see why you even want one sounds like it's nothing more than the .338 Win if that… why try to reinvent the wheel?

I have one in a handgun, yep, a 15" Lilja barreled XP-100 and the thing is a hammer for a handgun. Compared to rifle 338 performance it does not stack up but its amazing what you can get out of 15" of barrel in this chambering.

180 gr Ballistic Tip.......................2950 fps
200 gr Ballistic Tip.......................2800 fps
225 gr Partition...........................2650 fps

I generally use the 180 gr load and have taken mature mule deer out past 400 yards with it with no problem at all.

For a high volume long range rifle, the 338 WSM in a tactical style rifle would be very interesting with the 250 gr SMK or even the 300 gr SMK.

Thats exactly why I was looking at it. I am building my savage into a practice platform for my 338AM and was thinking about using the 338WSM, since barrel life would be sooo good.

Very interesting article...Thanks for the link...The 300 wsm stills wins in my mind,,150 grn smokes...and the 180 grn are pretty hot too..never shot anything over the 180 grn though...

i've always thought the 338wsm would be an absolute hammer. the hitting/killing power of a 338 is just a big step above the 30's. if i lived out west and wanted a light carry gun with elk being a possibility. the 338wsm would be my pick.

I built a simialr rifle to this many years ago (before any short mags were around) I took a 348 win case, improved it to 40deg shoulder, removed the rim from the case, cut a new extractor groove. It was put into a 600 rem action, Kevlar stock, light contour 22" bbl, 1-4x scope. Whole package was around 6# when done. The guy wanted a carry rifle for long treks during Elk hunts. His results were that and a bit better than that of a 338 win mag, only in a short action. He used 200grn horn soft points. that was the only one of those i ever built, mostly because of making the brass. It was a specialty project the customer wanted and designed most of it him self.

He still carries it with him for a back up rifle. He now hunts with a 338-416 rgby imp, long range version.

Somthing on the short mag case in 338cal does make a nice carry rifle with heavy hitting potencial.
