Hi

I just got my Rem 700 ADL Synthetic 300WM home. The stock has two pressure points/support points in the barrel channel.

What´s the concensus about those presure points? I have all my other rifles
barrels free floated and like it that way.

I havent had any chanse to try the rifle yet since the scope still is about 3 weeks from here...

(The stock will be changed in the future)

Bed the rifle so the receiver is stress free and remove any and all pressure points. You dont want anything touching the barrel.

I have to disagree. I have freefloated rifles that shoot great and rifles that won't shoot without the forward pressure points. All properly bedded of course. Break in that barrel first without doing anything, then see where it's shooting and go from there.

I have to disagree.

That's why they make chocolate & vanilla ice cream. I've built complete rifles, stocked numerous others and seen many different bedding styles. I stand by my original comment based on personal experiences and observations. My 6mmBR has a 1.250" x 30" straight barrel on it, it shoots in the .1's with ease, the barrel is completely free floated, no pressure points.

Although bedding under the barrel just in front of the receiver or pressure points them self's was the norm back in the day, it's simply not a necessity in order for a rifle to shoot. I simply prefer not to have anything touching my barrels but, I like vanilla, not chocolate.

rifle's are like finger prints there all different the only way to find out is to free float them then shoot them and see what happens. then go from there
of the 10 i free floated 2 had to have the pressure point put back in one was a mossberg 1500 7 mm RM the other was a weatherby fiberguard 270 win. . both are howa action's and have thin barrel's

Mr Roscoe, rifles that shoot in the .1's with ease are bound to show up in the winners' list at some matches. Please keep us posted.

I only shoot in the local club level matches here in Louisiana, if I lived in PA or closer to sanctioned matches, I would. Dont act so surprised that someones rifle will shoot in the .1's, there are numerous rifles out there doing just that but, are not being shoot at sanctioned matches. I know of several here where I shoot. Here's one of my builds, 6mmBR Norma, .104" free bore, .269" neck, Tooley MBR stock, SS Viper, 1.250" x 28" Kreiger, was 30" until I set it back 2", 8 twist, Leupold 8.5x25x50 LRT. 105 VLD Bergers with 30 grains of Varget & F205M's

Matches

Ever heard of the "Crawfish Match"? It's one of the premier group matches in the USA. It's held in La. every year. A rifle that shoots in the .1's could easily win that match. Your MBR stock would not be legal under IBS or NBRSA rules. Put it in another stock and get it down to 13.5 lbs. and she'll be "race ready".

Never been to the Crawfish but I beleive James Mock, one of the guys that shoots with us has been several times, I'll have to pick his brain about it. If a man shows up at the Crawfish with a 6BR though, he's shooting for second place. All up my gun weighs 19.5 to 20lbs. Prior to our matches starting in March I'll be re-barreling it with a Heavy Varmint, still wont make weight. The current barrel has over 2,500 rounds through it. At a group type match a 6BR wont hang with a 6PPC. I did say .1's with ease but, not every time I squeeze the trigger. I built the rifle for our local matches and one we shoot north east of Monroe, LA. Theres talk of that match being a 600 yard IBRSA sanctioned event next year though. At our last score match, myself and James Mock shot a 199 out of 200. He beat me by several X's though. I finished second to a 6PPC. Might have to build one of those one day.

A man shows up with a 6BR......

Doesn't matter what he's shooting if it shoots consistantly in the .1's. That was my point to begin with.

Diezel

Take things one at a time!

#1 break the barrel in with about 20 to 30 rounds and clean
after every shot for the first 10 shots,Then clean after every
2or 3 shots for the next 10. By then you should feel the bore
getting slick.

#2 Now after a good cleaning Shoot several groups to see if
they group or string (dont worry about the size just the shape)
because a line of hits horizontal or vertical normaly means a
poor stock to action/barrel fit.

#3 If it shoots a round group then all it may need is some load
development. If not go to step #4.

#4 Bed the entire action but leave the tip pressure point.(It can
be removed later) to help align the action during bedding.

#5 Shoot to see if bedding helped ,if not remove the pressure
point and shoot again.with barrel floated .

#6 Only take one step at a time and you may find that it shoots
well with out a lot of work.

#7 At this point it should be just a mater of load development to
get the most out of your rifle.

It sounds like a lot of work but it's worth it to get a good shooting
rifle in the end.

I guarantee 1/2 MOA on all of the custom rifles that I build and this
is the method that I use because it works for me.

If a factory rifle has a good barrel it can be made to shoot well.

Thanks every one.

J E Custom, I will follow your advice.
I have just started the break in process, only 4 rounds down the barrel yet.
Im waiting for a Leupold VX-III LRT 6.5-20x50 and Burris Signature rings now, the package will be here within 2 weeks I hope, so I cant do any real testing yet.
