.300 Dakota...Thoughts/strengths/weaknesses..ect.

Ok so I am looking for anything you know about the .300 dakota cartridge, i know there are ones that are faster that hit harder and so on i know about the edge and the Allens....this is pretty much what i have decided on for my first custom rifle...ill tell you why...i was going to build a win mag but didnt want a belt and i didnt like the radius on the weatherbys the .300 Dakota gets rid of both of theese things and offers roughtly the same performance or a little better than the .300 win mag. do any of you guys shoot this cartridge ? what loads and what bullets are working the best for you? if you can make a reccomendation for a different cartridge that there are reamers available to my smith i will consider them thanks in advance.

300 Dakota

JWP is right the 300 RUM.

The Dakota is a fine cartrige " BUT "

The rim diamenter is .544 (larger than a standard magnum bolt face
and requires some opening of the bolt face bye a smith.

It is based on the 404 jeffers but has been shortened.

The 300 RUM is also based on the 404 but has been blown out and
the rim is rebated to .534 (standard mag bolt face) It also has less
body taper giving it a 15% advantage in powder capacity.

Brass is available and so are loaded rounds.

The dakota is a proprietary cartridge making it difficult to find brass
or ammo.

Again Nothing wrong with the 300 dakota but there are better choices
and if the RUM doesent do it for you then a 30/378 or one of the wildcats
based on brass that is available might be the ticket.

I think you should seriously consider necking down the 375 Ruger to 30 caliber. It is very similar to the Dakota but has the standard magnum boltface. Bruin.

the dakota is interesting but if you pan on having the rifle for a while, the 300 rum brass is here to stay.

yes this is all true but i am not looking for that kind of case capacity, i want to be able to shoot this thing without getting beat up. and opening the bolt face isnt a big deal my smith can do it and has done it on a few to accept the .300 dakota already so that part doesnt bother me, i really wanted to go with a 30-378 but this gun isnt going to be heavy enough to allow that cartridge without taking extended breaks between strings of fire.

the 30-378 holds more grains than the 300rum

if you want a bit less than the rum, and were already looking at a weatherby what about the .300wby?

300 Slowpoke----is an improved RUM. Easy to fireform with bullseye and is still being developed but is progressing nicely.

300 RUM improved (do not waste time reinventing the wheel), it has already been done real well about 3-4 yrs ago. Gunsmith Ray Romain in PA has the reamers and all the info for ones he built.
