I was raised on Jack O'Connor but never owned a 270 til recently. The Sav 111 I bought off a guy has a Simmons 3-9x32 on it. Sight in went well seems to shoot gflatter and milder than my 06's. But I have a Bushnell 4-12x40AO with rings already set for a Savage. I was thinking about installing it on the 270 but thot maybe that was too much scope for the gun. It's light t now, perfect for a mtn gun, but the 4-12 is a bit heavy.

Any input appreciated...

not really sure what you mean by too much scope for the gun. The power of scope is strictly personal prefrance. 3-4 power isn't a very big jump, but it is a step. I had a 5.5-16.5 on a 30-06 for years, liked it but it would cause problems at ranges less than 50 yards.

A variable for sure. At least a 3x9. Once you get it shooting like you like, 600 yards is not to the limit of O'Connor's favorite. We have the opportunity for much better performance in both powder and bullet than he did.

Use Winchester brass and stoke'r up. 650 yd milk jugs should be regular fare for the gun.

Tho I am totally infatuated with my Mod 70 in 7RemMag, this 270 bug has bit me HARD. I am thinking of making it my goto gun for everything. But the current 3-9 Simmons on it seems insufficient. Wife had same scope on her 06 ans it fell apart inside while she was elk huntign with me and my daughter. Never thot about 650yrds with a 270, if thats doable I may abandon the Mod 70. Thx for the input.

I have been shooting my .270 Remington model 721 for over 26 years and love the gun. I regularly shoot paper at three hundred yards and am moving up the range for the 400 and 600 yard targets. I think 600 yards will be my limit with this gun and when I get consistent at putting all rounds into a 10" circle I will take some shots at some pigs with it.

So far I would not think twice, if weather conditions were right, to take shots on deer and pigs at three hundred yards and drop them DRT.

I am currently shooting Sierra 130 grn Pro Hunter. Thats just because thats what they had when I started reloading after I moved. I have nearly shot those up and will change to the Sierra 130 grn Game King next. I may try Bergers new .277 bullit when it comes out. This is my pig/coyote/deer/anything else that may present a shot thats legal to take gun.

After many years, I too aquired my first .270 Win. in a Ruger #1 International. What a sweet little mountain rifle. The overall length of the gun is just a fraction over 36" and the Leupold 2x7x33 fits just right.

What bullets do you use?

For deer, I have used factory loaded Hornady 130 gr. SST. The bullet has performed outstanding on all shoulder/body shots and also outstanding on a marginal brisket shot on one deer - the bullet expanded fast enough and well enough that it tore open the chest cavity enough to give a clean kill.

On a So. African plains game hunt last summer my partner and I shot all those large antelope (except eland) with .270 Winchesters. I used my 1954 Win. M70 with Nosler 150gr Partitions, and my pal used his Ultralite Arms (Melvin Forbes) .270 Win. with 130gr bullets. As per the mystique of the 270, they seemed to kill out of all proportion to their paper ballistics. I also used a .338, but it didn't do any better than the .270, and kicks a hell of a lot more.

Next time I'm taking a 7 STW (with muzzle brake), and leaving the .338 home.

I'd skip the 130 GmK and go with the Hornady 140 BTSP. Try it with some RL-22 and CCI-200s. I'm bettin' it does well and 650-700 yd shots aren't unreasonable at least at 4500 feet elevation. Down where hogs live it'll do gust as well.

Gee I may keep it and use it. I was gonna have the stock cut and give it to my oldest dau who elk hunts with me. I like the idea of the Leu 2-7x33 for an all around mtn rifle.

Roy In Idaho Is Right About The 140 Hornady Btsp. I Load Mine With 56.5 Grains Of Imr 7828 And Have Made One Shot Kills On A Moose, A Caribou, 2 Elk, And Numerous Mule Deer, Antelope And Whitetails, Along With Everything Else I Point It At. I Am Extremely Impressed With These Bullets. Longest Shot Was One Of The Caribou At 515 Yards Longest Death Run On Any Animal Shot With These Was 75 Yards.
