Editing Digital Photos

From the number of threads and views, it would seem that we have a number of folks that are interested in digital photograhy. How many of you use software to edit your photos and if so what do you use/recommend? I am in the market to update my old software (Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0) and was wondering what it the current state of the art that an amature would purchase/afford.

I'm Graphic Designer for a Brewing Company, and ALLWAYS I USE ADOBE PHOTOSHOP for editing images.
Don't go lower, just use the best software on the market, if you can afford. Or just buy a OEM version much cheaper.

What 300rum said, big time!!!!

Adobe Photoshop CSwhatever it is, the latest thing.

You will then have no limits on what you can do.

My daughter is a pro photographer in I/F, my son is like 300rum but add photography and cinamtography, and dumb ol' me, I do the aerial image thing. We all use the latest photoshop version.

Whatcha got to trade for a full licensed/legal version?

Photoshop CS2 is better to print from... CS3 is easier to stitch from.

I use them both.....

I photo a huge Trail ride every summer and usually there is 120 to 160 horseback riders.

I will do a panoramic of the riders. It usually takes 8 to 12 frames. I put them together on CS2 and print them out.

Typical print is 10 inches tall and 72 inches long.

I'll try to post a small version sometime soon....

Hope this is small enough... quality is low.

Real image is 384MB file. Print is 10" x 75"

I took nine shots this year with my 20D Canon.

Thanks one and all for your advise. It looks like it's unanimous in the vote for Photoshop CS (version 2 or 3), its what the big dogs use. My current Photoshot Elements 3.0 can't even open a Nikon RAW file, to say nothing about editing it. Does anyone know anything about Nikon Capture NX for initial image downloading and very basic editing to be followed by the serious editing in Photoshop CS?

I am still in the aquire mode for hardware - my new 200-400 VR lens is supposed to arrive next week as is the Wimberley tripod head. The big Gitzo carbon fiber tripod was "reduced to possession" this week. The elk in Yellowstone NP are supposedly approaching the peak of the rut...

Bottom line, I guess that the software will have to follow the hardware purchases.

Unless you plan to go Pro, Photoshop Elements 5.0 will do a lot more than your old version. Works great on Raw images too! At a lessor learning curve and better price point.

I don't have any recent experience with Elements and I use Photoshop CS2.

I'll be after the elk in RMNP for a day or so before heading on to SW Colorado for fall color.
