Help choosing cartridge

I am planning on buying a new rifle in the next few weeks and need some help with deciding on the cartridge. I have decided on either the remington 700 CDL deluxe in 300RUM or the remington 700 LSS in 7mmRUM or 338RUM. Ideally, I would like the 300RUM in the LSS model but can't get it. I want a cartridge for up to 1000 yard targets and hunting deer and elk from 100 to 700 plus yards. I am a left handed shooter and I reload. Is the 7mm enough gun for what I want it for? Is the 338 overkill? If I have to I'll settle on the 300 as it is my second choice. (I prefer the looks of the LSS!) Recoil is not a huge concern for me.

All that I could find for now, any would work for what you are wanting. Could not find anything in the lss, being left handed kind of hurts you on finding rifles that you are looking for. Hope this helps oldfamily.

I do not need to find a place to buy these guns but thanks anyway. I just need info on the best cartridge I have listed for what I want to do! Besides, I am in Canada and can't get guns from the States. So again, after reading my above post, is the 7mm good enough for what I want? If not, is the 338 or 300 the best choice? Or is the 338 overkill since I won't be hunting grizzlies or anything?

If I were to shoot elk out to as far as 700 yards, I would probably opt for the 338 RUM...

Even if you hunt bear, the 338 would be perfect for that as well. Even for deer at long-range, the 338 would be hard to beat for that as well...

Yes, the 7mm would probably be more than adequate but for the longer distances and large bodied big game, personally, I would go with the 338....

i'm pretty much with DT, when you say elk and 1K,my vote is for the 338. i've had both the 7RUM and now the 338/300. my 338 will push a 300 gr bullet to almost the same speed a 7 will push a 200. it just has a whole bunch more hitting power at longer ranges. a 300 is a great cartridge also. if you can't get an elk with one of those, you probably won't get him with a 338.

Being a lefty too, I found a 338 lss here on the board from philny1. I plan on taking it elk and deer hunting. I think the term overkill has too much negative connotation. I think of it as "more than adequate". In my opinion the 7mm and .300 are just to close to adequate at extended ranges.

Too bad you can't get a gun from here in the states, Philny1 had another 338 lh lss for $679 about 2 weeks ago.

You can import guns from the states or anywhere else, just as long as the rifle is not made in Canada. All you have to do is pay the G.S.T. and is regristered with the federal goverment . I notice that from your screen name that you are from Alberta. I'm from Westlock. As for a Rem LSS Wholesale sports has a few Ultramags for sale. Just go on their website and scroll down to hunting,click on "centrefire rifle" , click on Remington, click on LSS and you'll see a 338& a 7mm Ultramag. They also have 13 others in various models. Left & right handed. I hope this helps.

Thanx for all the info! I guess I should have reworded part of my original post. The guns listed are what I can get and have decided on... the one I really would like that I cannot find is the 300 ultra in the LSS model. (Buckboy - Wholesale sports was exactly where I was looking to buy these guns!) Nice to see another Albertan on here My understanding was that firearms, parts and riflescopes are no longer allowed to be purchased in the states and brought across the border. There is so much confusion apparently that even the customs agents aren't sure anymore.

I'm from Calgary, and I am happy because I'm not the only one on this forum from AB.
I have a 300rum on BDL, but I havit problem getting one from the wholesalle sport . dID YOU TRIED AT Russelsports, How about the Canadian Tire close to Heritage drive (Calgary) this one is the only one who got licence for firearms.
The guys form this location are great... Just give them a try.
I have friend with 7mmRem, and another 3 with 300rum.
I choose 300rum, because of the power of bullet, and with 200AB you can get easelly an elk at 1K.
338 RUM sound great, if you have in plan to go further 1500 yard and up.
If you can manage the recoil go for.
